The initial success of PS5 and Xbox One could overshadow that of PS4 and Xbox One
Although 2020 points to one of the rounded years that we remember in terms of video games (Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Last of Us 2 …), no one escapes that everything will be paralyzed next fall with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X. The new consoles will kick off a new race in which the stopwatches for Sony and Microsoft are restarted, although the feelings left during this generation will surely mark many players.
The situation for Xbox and PlayStation in 2020 is very different from what it was in 2013, when they arrived on the PS4 and Xbox One market, and therefore it is very difficult to predict who will take the cat to the water during the first months. Whoever leads the way, the predictions of Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at IHS Markit, are very positive. The analyst has spoken in the latest edition of MCVUK magazine and expects the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X will overcome the success of its predecessors:
"Although there is much that we do not know about the launch of the new generation consoles, my expectations are that both PS5 and Xbox Series X have a strong launch if there are no supply restrictions and the price remains in an acceptable range, which would be 499 dollars or below. "
"I hope Microsoft has a much more effective release this generation compared to Xbox One."
The analyst says that although starting PS5 has an advantage because of the large player base of PS4, he thinks it's hard for Microsoft to repeat the Xbox One launch disaster:
"With" strong "I mean that both PS5 and Xbox Series X will exceed the launch numbers of PS4 and Xbox One. I maintain this vision because PS4 has a significantly larger active player base compared to PS3 in 2013, which should put Sony in a stronger launch starting position. I also hope that Microsoft has a much more effective launch this generation compared to Xbox One and that they are better positioned for the first buyers. "
PS Now and Xbox Game Pass will be vital in the new generation to differentiate the offer of each console
Finally, Harding-Rolls has highlighted the strategic importance of services like Xbox Game Pass or PS Now In the next generation (although Microsoft's service is already settled, there is still much to improve on PlayStation Now):
"In the new generation I expect a stronger focus on services to differentiate the offer of each console. It is certain that Microsoft will focus on its Xbox Game Pass, but only as part of a range of ways to access content through different models of monetization and distribution. I also hope that Sony will continue to evolve PS Now, how platform owners mix their services together and how they integrate their product offerings will play an important role in attracting consumers.
