- Warning: spoilers for Spider-Man: Crossing the Multiverse
All Marvel fans, especially the followers of the friend and neighbor Spider-Man, are looking forward to the next animated film by Miles Morales: Spider-Man: Beyond the Multiverse. It’s no wonder, considering the twisted and dark ending it left us with. Spider-Man: Crossing the Multiverse.
Nobody was left indifferent. It’s safe to say that most of us think (even utter) something like “Is it over yet?”, “It can’t end like this!” or my favorite “They can’t leave us like this for years!” This ending hides a very dark question: what would have happened to Miles Morales if the spider had not bitten him? Remember that the spider that bites our Miles is not from his universe, but from Earth-42… the place where Miles ends up at the end of the second movie.
The original idea for the finale was for Miles Morales to meet Uncle Aaron as the Marauder on Earth 42, the same way it happens in his universe. However, Kemp Powers, one of the film’s co-directors, had a last-minute idea that changed everything. He told the story to GamesRadar in 2023:
Aaron was still The Marauder well into development. I remember we had a Zoom meeting and it occurred to me: Miles should be The Marauder. I felt bad because someone was presenting something else […] There was already a design for that Miles, but we sent our wonderful designer back to the drawing board and asked him to redesign the character as The Marauder.
The theme was always essentially the same: if Miles never got powers, what happened to him? But the original wasn’t that shocking. We had Miles as Aaron’s sidekick, his Robin, but becoming The Marauder evoked a completely different emotion.
That there is a universe in which Miles Morales becomes The Marauder, played by Tio Aaron in the original universe of the trilogy, adds a very dark and powerful message: perhaps our Miles was destined to be a villain and not Spider-Man. that we know. Not long ago we learned that the new film will be very emotional and will be about how the protagonist deals with betrayal and other dark emotions.
