The return of an iconic SF saga

One of the greatest and oldest science fiction sagas will return to cinemas in 2024 with the aim of starting a new trilogy. Spoiler alert: Planet of the Apes 4: The New Kingdom has already collected $135.6 million at the box office after just five days of release in domestic and international markets.

Better yet, the Wes Ball-directed film is largely praised by critics (80% on RottenTomatoes) and the general public (79% on RottenTomatoes). So all the lights are green for the start of construction on a sequel. Noa and Mae/Nova, played by Owen Teague and Freya Allan (The Witcher on Netflix), respectively, could then explore this post-apocalyptic earth in more detail.

Kevin Durand, James Cameron’s ally against AI

This new installment of the Planet of the Apes series completely renews its cast with confirmed actors and actresses as well as the new Hollywood guard. Next to the already mentioned Owen Teague and Freya Allan is the impressive Kevin Durand. Known for his roles in The Butterfly Effect, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Resident Evil: Retribution, The actor of Canadian origin plays the big villain from “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”. : the self-proclaimed heir of Caesar… Proximus Caesar.

During an interview Kevin Durand gave to the JV editorial team, he returned to his connection to the Planet of the Apes franchise and discovering it when he was younger. He said he was “fascinated” and “terrified” by these talking monkeys. The 1968 film even made him want to become an actor. He also recognizes his ability to question humanity and the consequences of our way of life on the environment.

At the end he talks about artificial intelligence, which he believes could dominate humanity within a decade.

Now we have artificial intelligence that becomes 1,000 times smarter every night as we sleep than it was the day before. What will happen? Will they take control in 10 years? 15 years? I don’t know. This raises many questions for me.

This commentary on AI is reminiscent of James Cameron’s diverse positions on the subject. I have to say that The director of “Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is well placed to talk about it, having predicted the advent of this technology

…as well as the extinction of humans by machines. In a recent interview, he goes one step further and explains that he sounded the alarm, but the (scientific) world was deaf.

I warned you in 1984 and you didn’t listen. We are heading towards a Terminator-style scenario where artificial intelligence (AI) spirals out of control and poses a threat to humanity. -James Cameron
