Whatever your attitude towards guns in real life (for the record, they suck and civilians shouldn’t have them), it’s hard not to become some kind of virtual gun fan when you’re a fan of the game, because inevitably, we The main weapon’s interaction with the game world is to fire bullets into it. Even if it’s not a shooter, guns are often used as tools or special attacks. Sometimes – not very often, but more often than you might think – we get games with fully fledged shooting mechanics and an array of guns that you can’t even use until hours later. Maybe make you wait until the final to take action before it grants you the right to bear arms (note: nothing to do with bears, see previous episode).
There’s always a very good narrative justification for this. Maybe the game is set in a place where guns are naturally scarce, like the past or Shropshire. Perhaps the developers cleverly conveyed the relationship between the instant, maximum violence provided by automatic weapons and the delicate, patient art of having to stab or beat someone. Whatever the reason, this week our esteemed panel of professional gaming enthusiasts were tasked with deciding which of these rare treats is the best.
