You don’t have to stick with it Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red’s latest open world escapade was released last week with a rough mix of fanfare and criticism, with much of the anger being attributed to how bad the game is doing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
Those who purchased the game digitally on Xbox One can request a refund directly from Microsoft Xbox support page. Once you are signed in, you should see a list of purchases made on your account on this page. But – and that shouldn’t come as a surprise – it’s a bit shaky. Cyberpunk 2077 is on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S playable via backward compatibility, where it both looks nicer and runs better than last generation computers. New generation versions are scheduled for an unspecified date in the future. No matter what console you’re playing on, you’re playing the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game for now – the one that a lot of people are unhappy with. Since both refund methods are run through a browser rather than directly on your console, there is no obvious reason why your console of choice should prevent you from receiving a refund.
It gets muddy at brick and mortar retailers. When you’ve picked up a boxed copy of the game, CD Projekt Red says to get back to the store first – amid a pandemic that continues to generate waves of bans – you made the purchase at and requested a refund there first. OK. For sure. Let’s say you put on a mask and return to your local Best Buy (a big box dealer with a notoriously strict Take-back guarantee for video games). After some back and forth and some required doggie eyes, the customer service representative you speak to is still saying what “LOL no” means. What now?
In this or a similar case, CD Projekt Red tells you to contact helpmerefund directly via email [at] cdprojektred [dot] com where the company will “do our best to help”. The e-mail address is open until December 21st. It is unclear what “our best” means and whether CD Projekt Red will be able to circumvent specific retailer guidelines.
Kotaku CD Projekt Red has been informed of how it would issue refunds to such SOL players. At the time of going to press, the company had not responded. On Friday CD Projekt Red announced The company had already amortized the development costs for Cyberpunk 2077, one day after the game was officially launched.
