Disney Plus is sending a whole range of new Star Wars and Marvel series into the running in the coming years. Meanwhile, Amazon is working on a billionaire Lord of the Rings project. And after the end of Game of Thrones, HBO wants to get even more out of the fantasy universe of the author George RR Martin.
As Variety such as Entertainment Weekly report, this happens not only in the course of the Targaryen prequel House of the Dragon, but now also with two new projects. Specifically, the short stories should be about »Dunk and Egg«, as well as the prehistory of Game of Thrones around the Rebellion by Robert Baratheon to be filmed.
After HBO has already cut off a prequel with Bloodmoon and actually implemented another with House of the Dragon, the future of Game of Thrones remains in the past.
HBO is currently working on these three GoT series
Dunk and Egg
The “Tales of Dunk and Egg” or “The Hedge Knight of Westeros” is a short story collection by George RR Martin. It plays around 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and turns to the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Great and his squire Aegon Targaryen.
The short story collection is extremely popular among fans, but – like The Song of Ice and Fire – has not been finished by George RR Martin to this day. Readers accompany “Dunk and Egg” on their travels through the lands of Westeros, during which Dunk wants to prove himself as an honorable knight and Aegon wants to escape everyday life as a noble son.
According to Variety, the project is currently under development at HBO but it is not guaranteed that it will actually be put into action. In 2017, Martin already revealed that the template for a TV implementation would theoretically come into question, however, later rowed backthat at least at this point there were no plans for an adaptation.

Roberts Rebellion
The gross circumstances of Robert Baratheon’s rebellion against the mad King Aerys II Targaryen Game of Thrones viewers already know: Together with Ned Stark, Robert turned against the rule of the Targaryens, while the King of Westeros was murdered by Jaime Lannister.
Should Robert Rebellion actually be implemented as a TV series, we would see the young versions of well-known characters again – for example Tywin and Cersei Lannister and of course Robert, Jaime and Eddard.
House of the Dragon
We currently know most about this project, and House of the Dragon is currently the most advanced: This prequel deals with the so-called “Dance of Dragons” and plays 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
At the center of the plot is the Targaryen family war, in which various factions of the house fight for the Iron Throne and rule over Westeros.
House of the Dragon is slated to start in 2022, and there are already first actors such as Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz) as King Viserys I or Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Daemon Targaryen.

How are the chances?
That House of the Dragon will start is certain. The project was officially commissioned by HBO and the first season of the new Game of Thrones series is scheduled to start in 2022 at the latest.
At the moment, however, it remains questionable whether the other two projects will actually be implemented. At this point in time, HBO is likely to discuss whether and how Dunk and Egg or Roberts Rebellion meet the company’s own standards and expectations. Until then, the potential TV series can still slide a lot in between.
For example, before House of the Dragon, the prequel Bloodmoon was planned, which was to explore the history of the children of the forest and the origins of the White Walkers thousands of years before the war for the Iron Throne. Even a pilot was filmed before the project starring Naomi Watts was sawed off.
Accordingly, fans should not be too early, it is still a long way for Dunk and Egg and Roberts Rebellion to get the green light from HBO
