Lego Super Marios Luigi Set: Release Date, Price and Impressions

After Lego first announced the introduction of Mario’s big, shy brother Luigi into the Lego universe in April, Lego finally shared how the Mario brothers will sync for a new version of the two-player cooperative (or competitive) Lego game . In addition, four new expansion sets, two power-up packs (Frog and Bee) and ten new random character packs have been revealed, all slated to be released on August 1st for the first anniversary of the Nintendo and Lego collaboration. I had the chance to play with some of the new sets and was impressed with both the new functionality and the intuitive game mechanics … not for me but for my 7 year old boss who immediately understood how to have fun for has both of us.

It probably goes without saying, but I’m old. Although I love building a Lego set, I haven’t played with a Lego set in a long time. Even the first Lego Super Mario sets we bought last summer (thanks for the timing, Lego, we needed it) were a lot of fun so I can watch my son play

. But with the new two-player gameplay introduced with the Luigi set, I took an active part in the synchronized jumping and collaborative coin collecting that is built into the game’s new “dual play” mechanics.

In order to prepare the coupling with Luigi, we had to update our existing Lego Super Mario app. From there, just hold the bluetooth button – that’s the top button – on the back of both characters to pair them, after which they’ll say hello and wear matching bandanas around their necks. (I should note here that the printed Power and Bluetooth symbols on our Mario figure rubbed off almost immediately, and I was a bit surprised when I noticed that the symbols on the new Luigi figure were already about halfway through after just a few days there are).

When combined, synchronized movements such as jumping and flipping will receive bonus coins, and the new play sets include new features that reward collaborative play, such as alternately jumping on an enemy’s vulnerable QR code or working together, as in the spinning Lakitu Sky World expansion . As we set up courses to play through, my son kept correcting me and trying to create a course that was optimized for both scoring and a logical story of each level with color-specific regions and other elements (he added a Optional

Bonus timer, but advised us not to use it).

We also have a nearly 3 year old Lego fan in the house who is still at the edible stage of Lego exploration, but because the Lego Super Mario components are so fun to play with built, he’s almost playing with us. But not quite.

There is something about the constructed nature of the assembled elements that satisfies my impulse to build a set and put it on a shelf forever. While I’ve never put together a Krazy Glue Lego set, I definitely feel sorry for dad out The Lego movie. The set has enough creative hooks to keep me from embracing such persistence. You can take them apart and shuffle levels again, all according to your own play style that day … but without literally taking every piece apart brick by brick until it’s reassembled in some kind of non-working Lego horror show.

Although we didn’t take advantage of the in-app challenges for the Lego Super Mario stuff we already have, now I’m going to see some of the building challenges as we can both play together. Yeah, I’ll still be fiddling with some of the fantasy-driven mechanics (what do you mean, I can’t just pick up my character and move it where I want?). But the winning status of this level is up, and I’m honestly sorry if that’s really cheesy, but let’s see if that gets cut out … the winning status is just spending time playing a completely different type of Mario game with to play my son.
