Square Enix has not announced a release date or price for the “Remaster”. It is still unclear whether existing Steam owners of Final Fantasy v and Final Fantasy VI receive free or discounted copies of the new publications. (When asked for a comment, a Square Enix representative didn’t immediately have details.)
The Pixel Remaster series has already sparked some controversy, as detailed by one old vs. new sprite comparison on RPG site. From the materials Square Enix showed at E3, it is clear that the Six Pixel Remaster games will have yet another new set of sprites, but whether they do justice to the sprites of the original NES and SNES versions or in any Improve wisely is an open question.
Square Enix has not always done justice to such things. The soon-to-fail PC versions of Final Fantasy v and Final Fantasy VI have been widely pilloried as shoddy ports of beloved games. The response was so bad that Modders got on board to comprehensively revise their graphics and other aspects in order to bring them closer to the SNES standards. Even modified, however, these are not considered particularly good ports of the two classic JRPGs.

Nobody really knows what the Pixel Remaster games will look like. So far we’ve only seen a short trailer. Who knows: they might end up as true-to-original adaptations that capture the spirit of the originals. Maybe they look and play like chocobo shit. But for some players the only possible outcome is improvement, if only in a marginal sense.
“The ones who are currently switched on [Steam] are already the ruined versions, ”said one user on twitter. “Whatever it replaces could, in the worst case, be a side effect.”
