With the new feature introduced in Speedtest for Android, you can find out if your mobile phone and internet connection supports streaming 4K content. This is very useful if you also plan to upgrade your subscription if you want to change operator and need to know the maximum quality of its services.

A few years ago it was not very common to stream content on the phone, but the increase in price gigs, aside from infrastructure speed improvements, made it possible to watch Netflix, Disney + , HBO or Amazon. Developed by Ookla, Speedtest not only has a web, it also offers access from mobile phones through its applications. These have a little-known option: the video test.

Speedtest introduced the aforementioned video test in its apps for iOS in February 2021; lagging so far in the case of Android. Its objective is simple: find out the maximum streaming resolution reached by the Internet connection. Whether you are going to read content on your mobile or watch it on TV: with Speedtest you can analyze the behavior of the network reaching your home.

To analyze the video capabilities of your connection, you need to do the following:

If you didn’t have Speedtest on your Android yet, you can download it from Google Play.
Open the app and go to the “Video” tab, in the bottom menu.
Click on the “Play” icon and Speedtest will download different videos with different resolutions and codecs.
After the analysis, the application will tell you what are the maximum capacities of your connection in terms of video resolution.

You can use the data generated by the app as a guide to subscribe to plans premium platforms, like with Netflix. Since in order to watch 4K you have to pay the maximum monthly payment, make sure your home has sufficient speed and bandwidth. You can check this using the Speedtest while you connect to WiFi, it also helps you to know if your mobile operator is suitable in case you want to use a router with a SIM card for example.

The data provided by Speedtest is indicative, network capacity is variable and not all platforms offer identical download speeds. Our recommendation is that perform various tests, especially at the most saturated hours of the day (between 9 p.m. and midnight). And be very careful to do them on the mobile network if you don’t have a comfortable price: each test can consume up to 500 MB.
