A year ago, Animal Crossing: New Horizons gave us the tempting opportunity to mimic something we couldn’t in real life: go outside. Now the new one 2.0 update similarly, it enables some of us to have a vicarious experience that we IRL cannot achieve. You can now prepare Instagram-worthy meals, even if you’re actually a chef who occasionally sets pasta on fire. (Do not ask.)
When you’ve downloaded the new one Deer crossing To update today, you can go to Nook Stop to unlock the Cooking Mechanic and then pick up more recipes at Nook’s Cranny. When you have the ingredients – and this is a big if – you can start preparing meals in your kitchenette.
So far, I’ve unlocked staples like bread, pancakes, gnocchi, tomato curry, and cupcakes. Some recipes seem to be more seasonal, like the carrot cake, carrot potage, and the pumpkin and bagel sandwich. These are not as realistic as the meals in, say, Death loopbut I am delighted with how soft she is in the Deer crossing Art style. I also like that many of the dishes go beyond the usual buttered toast and spaghetti with marinara. The recipes look especially tempting considering my island rep ate only apples and the occasional birthday cake for an entire year.
Unfortunately, apple smoothies are the only thing I can “cook” at the moment. For many recipes, I have to make flour and sugar that can only be processed if you have sugar cane and wheat available. None of these exist on my island or in Leif’s local shop. The next thing I have are the overgrown weeds that look exactly like wheat, and they mock me. I’ll see if visiting the newly updated Harv’s Island – a former photo open destination that turned into a mall – fixes that or I’ll pester that Kotaku Co-workers to let me on their islands. Either way, this beautiful bread basket will be mine.

To answer your burning question, yes, you can eat the dishes you create in your kitchen. I spent two apples to make an apple smoothie and drinking restored two units of fullness. The foods don’t pile up, however, so it’s still more efficient to eat your fruit without all of the extra steps.
To be honest, the cooking mechanic is just as much fun as the craft mechanic. That means: not very much. But hey, in this case it’s about the destination, not the journey. The real appeal lies in my ability to show off all of my delicious creations to my friends. What I will do once I have deflowered my entire island until it is fit for human eyes.
