In case you didn’t know, in the past Intel offered a specific guarantee for users who were going to put their processors in trouble with high or extreme overclocking, so that they didn’t run out of CPU as such and after having paid a little the price.
Although Intel and AMD sell their processors unlocked, warranty policies exclude techniques such as overclock, since they exceed the capabilities and limitations set by both brands and logically, if the CPU suffers damage for this reason, there will be no guarantee if this reason is detected.
Well, from the hand of Dr Ian Cutress and after the presentation and launch of Alder Lake, an Intel representative in Taiwan slipped what could be another reason to leave your precious Core 12 processor unsecured: activate AVX -512 could be a reason for void the processor warranty.
Why would the AVX-512 warranty be voided?
In the first place, it should be clarified that this is not a confirmation as such, because as Ian Cutress says, he is an Intel representative in a local meeting, which could indicate that he is not a global standard or policy, but … well it is true and as we have consulted in the Intel datasheet
Intel does not activate this feature by default and it is apparently the manufacturers who dictate that it can be activated through their firmware and with the excuse of deactivating E-Cores as we mentioned at the beginning. Because? Well, mainly because of the consumption and the temperatures. AVX-512 is extremely demanding in these two sections and the Intel Core 12 processors are already fully compressed with a PL1 = PL2 241 watts
Therefore, if Intel detects that a processor has died due to a fault or a reason to activate AVX-512, it is highly likely that it will leave that processor out of warranty taking into account everything described. above. This is something similar to what happened with the AMD, Zen 1 and FMA4 instructions, where it was shown that by launching working code for said instructions, the processors were running instead of canceling l ‘operation and AMD did not recognize it as a feature in itself and we never knew the reasons.
So in summary, if you enable AVX-512 in BIOS or disable E-Cores and your motherboard activates these instructions directly, pray that the processor does not crash, you do not have a power outage or problem that could leave the processor as a clipboard, because Intel is surely not going to replace it.
