At the end of the day, you could probably fight your way through most story battles with a high-ranking team and a healthy supply of healing items. (EV training can also help a lot.) But the game is just more fun if you stick to the type table to fight most efficiently. Pokémon blows by when you take out every member of an opposing team with a super-effective hit. And knowing the map like the back of your hand is essential for the post-game multiplayer battles that the Pokémon Community. After all, your opponent probably does.
