Shortly before Christmas 2021, it’s back to the Matrix! With “Matrix Resurrections” the science fiction trilogy gets a 4th part 18 years after the last film. It not only returns Keanu Reeves (“John Wick 4”) as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, but also Jada-Pinkett Smith as Niobe, as the new 2nd trailer confirms.
In the first trailer for “Matrix Resurrections” we already learned that Neo and Trinity seem to have forgotten that the Matrix exists and therefore lead an ordinary life within the Matrix. Th is apparent restart made numerous fans suspect that the new film will not be a direct sequel, but a reboot.
At the latest, the current trailer should have proven that all the similarities to the first “Matrix” film are specifically addressed in “Matrix Resurrections”, so it is important for the plot that some things are repeated here. So the new film will not be a reboot.
The new trailer certainly makes you want more, but it doesn’t reveal too much about the actual story of “Matrix Resurrections”. Good news for all curious fans who couldn’t resist the trailer, but who can now be surprised by the film.
In Germany, “Matrix Resurrections” starts in cinemas on December 23, 2021 and has to fight for the largest halls with “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which starts a week earlier. In the US it starts on December 22nd, where “Matrix Resurrections” can also be seen at the same time on the streaming service HBO Max.
