Netzwelt lists the 8 biggest questions that are still open after the finale of the first season of “The Wheel of Time”.
Season 2 of the fantasy series “The Wheel of Time”, which only started on Amazon Prime Video in November 2021, has long been a done deal (although it could get in the way of Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” series).
The season 1 finale gave viewers some answers to big questions, but many still remain open. We list the 8 biggest unanswered questions before the 2nd season of “The Wheel of Time”. Have fun with it.
Attention: From here on spoilers for the original book by Robert Jordan and possible spoilers for later seasons of the Amazon series will follow!
1: Who is the Dragon Reborn?
In the legendary book by Robert Jordan there is never a doubt: Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) is the Dragon Reborn. Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) knew this at a fairly early stage – and so did the readers, of course.
However, the Amazon series “The Wheel of Time” changes the central prophecy about the dragon reborn. It is also possible here that a woman is the dragon, or even several people share this role.
The finale of the first season of “The Wheel of Time” confirmed the first impression after Rand al’Thor as a Dragon Reborn. However, Egwene (Madeleine Madden) and Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) also take part in the big, final confrontation at the Tarwin Pass and destroy a Trolloc army there.
That role falls to Rand al’Thor in the original book, which suggests that the full truth about the Dragon Reborn may not have been revealed in season 1.
2: has the Dark King been defeated?
In the Season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time,” Rand al’Thor appears to defeat the Dark King. But Moiraine quickly realizes that she has been misled. She discovers some broken shards of cuendillar, a nearly indestructible substance also known as a heart stone. In the original book, the seals on the Dark King’s prison are made of this mineral.
So it seems that Rand al’Thor has the One Power with his outbreak the Dark King’s prison weakened instead of defeating him. In addition, the Dark King now knows the identity of the Dragon Reborn.
Once again, the book is illuminating: There Moiraine and Rand al’Thor are not facing the Dark King at all, but rather his most powerful servant, Ishamael, the leader of the lost. Ishamael and the rest of the lost use the weakening of the seals to flee – and the Dark King would not have appeared yet!
3: does Logain know Rand is the Dragon Reborn?
The false dragon Logain Ablar (Álvaro Morte) was dampened during the first season of “The Wheel of Time” and lost his power. He also saw Rand al’Thor as a prisoner in Tar Valon and laughed out loud.
The background to this short scene from season 1 can be found in the original book. There it is revealed that despite its dampening, Logain still has the ability to sense male power directors. He also saw Rand’s power at the sight of him.
At that moment Logain is amused at the fact that a male power leader is walking around free – and that too at the foot of the White Castle. But he does not immediately recognize that Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn – although he certainly suspects it.
4: Can Moiraine Regain the One Power?
In the finale of the first season of “The Wheel of Time”, the Dark King (or his servant Ishamael) withdraws Moiraine access to the One Power. This represents a big change compared to the original book, where Moiraine only has such an experience much later.
Like “The Wheel of Time” showrunner Rafe Judkins of the side Decider revealed, this was done on the Amazon show so that Moiraine has enough to do in season 2. In Book 2 of the literary model, Moiraine appears in only one chapter. Since she has already been established as the main character in the Amazon series (and is also played by superstar Rosamund Pike), Moiraine must of course receive a significant storyline in season 2.
5: is the Ogier Loial really dead?
For book readers, the season 1 finale of “The Wheel of Time” had a more than shocking twist in store: The popular Ogier Loial (Hammed Animashaun) was apparently killed. That surprised a lot because Loial is one of the most important characters in the books and has a great influence on the further course of the story.
But is the fan favorite really dead? No! Showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed the site CBR: “[…] Loial isn’t dead in the season 1 finale. ”
6: Why is Mat returning to Tar Valon?
The Dark King seems to be hoping that at least one of the 5 friends will switch to his side. Currently, Mat (Barney Harris) appears as the most likely candidate for this. Finally, in Season 1, Mat was under the influence of an enchanted dagger that fed on the darkness slumbering within him.
His friends left Mat before they went on the Short Ways. Instead of facing the Dark King, Mat returned to Tar Valon in the season 1 finale. According to “The Wheel of Time” showrunner Rafe Judkins, Mat will be cured of the ominous influence of the dagger here in season 2.
7: Who is Liandrin’s Mysterious Man?
Liandrin Guirale (Kate Fleetwood) is an Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah who viewers of “The Wheel of Time” meet in Season 1. Liandrin seems to hate male power directors, but in the 6th episode Moiraine reveals that she knows a secret of Liandrin: The Red Ajah meets regularly with a mysterious man.
Moiraine probably thinks this is a romance or affair, though. Book readers know, however, that Liandrin secretly belongs to the Black Ajah. These Aes Seda betrayed their oaths and secretly swore allegiance to the Dark King.
Since the Aes Sedai in the White Castle have absolutely no idea of this, Liandrin can manipulate her sisters in peace.
8: Who Are the Seanchan Invaders?
In the finale of the first season of “The Wheel of Time”, the Seanchan arrive, a fleet of invaders who come across the water. In this empire, power directors are treated very differently. Here they are enslaved.
The Seanchan will become formidable adversaries in Season 2 and the following. If the Amazon series sticks to the template, Egwene will be enslaved by them and Mat will be in connection with the Empress.
