News business NFT: Two Japanese publishers come up with different ambitions!
NFTs, Metavers and other play-to-earn titles are now the focus of the news, leaving no one indifferent. Ubisoft has revealed its Quartz platform, Peter Molyneux is planning his next project around these mechanics, while GSC (STALKER) has given up and Josef Farès (It Takes Two) has no plans to get started.
The topic of NFTs, these digital objects authenticated by the blockchain, seems to be a groundswell in the entire industry. Epic Games is building its metaverse, supporting NFT-related game projects, and many companies are now making their intentions knownwhich leads to much debate.
Square Enix relies on NFTs
There is currently public speech seems to reject the principle mostlywhich didn’t stop Peter Molyneux Selling NFT for over $ 50 million based on digital plots for his legacy project. At the beginning of the new year two new editors, Japanese in which case they have announced their intentions with respect to NFTs two very different approaches.
The first company we’ll talk about is Square Enix, the publisher of the Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Just Cause, Dragon Quest, NieR or Life Is Strange license. In his greeting letter, which is mainly aimed at investors, CEO Yosuke Matsuda has shown real interest in NFTs, Metaverse, Blockchain and Play-to-Earn games
I see 2021 not just as “Metaverse: Year One” but also as “NFT: Year One” as it was a year when NFTs were received with great enthusiasm by a rapidly growing user base. However, here and there we see examples of overheated trade in digital goods based on NFTs with somewhat speculative connotations, regardless of the observed value of the content provided. This is of course not an ideal situation, but I expect a possible regulation will (appear).
I understand that the people who “play for fun”, who make up the majority of the gamers, have expressed reservations about these new trends, and that’s understandable. I do believe, however, that there are a number of people whose motivation is “to play to make a difference” and by doing that I want to help make the game more exciting. The traditional game offered no explicit incentive for this latter group of people, who were motivated solely by personal feelings such as benevolence and volunteer work. (…)
User generated content (mods, annotation) was created solely out of a desire to express themselves and not out of an explicit incentive to reward them for their creative endeavors. SEGA is monitoring trends, but is still hesitant
If Square Enix’s intentions are clear, SEGA’s still seem unclear. Editor and main actor in the arcade for decades, SEGA recently talked about NFTs in a question-and-answer session with investors. The editor is not closed to the question, but has decided not to vote. For now, SEGA wants to experiment with several things, but “nothing has been decided at this point”.
With regard to NFT, we would like to try different experiments and have already started various studies and deliberations, but nothing has been decided yet regarding pay-to-earn. There have already been many announcements in this regard, also abroad, but there are some users who react negatively at this point. There are many things that we need to consider carefully, such as: For example, how we can mitigate the negative elements and how far we can bring this into Japanese regulations, what is and is not acceptable to users by users.
Then we’ll take a closer look at that when it leads to our constantly creation, forever captivating mission, but if it’s just seen as making money I’d like to make the decision not to move forward, said Haruki Satomi, a senior executive.
In other words, the editor Richter does not have enough perspective on the phenomenon to make strong announcements and reveal a solid strategy. The legal issue is at the heart of the issue, as is NFT’s actual interest in developed games. So, for now, the point is to watch while you wait Finally, introduce game mechanics that go beyond the mere lucrative dimension. Apparently, the questions then turned to the metaverse evoked by Facebook, Epic Games, Google, and many other companies:
As for the definition of “metaverse”, I see it as a place where people come together and communities emerge. For example, I think that “Fortnite” and “Animal Crossing” are defined as metaverse because that is where a lot of people gather and community is created. So I think it’s important that the license itself is well established and well received by many users. However, I believe that the goal is not to create a metaverse, but the most important thing is to create a quality game. We want to make the “Super Game” with its network and its community a universal and cross-platform game.
Super Game is a game with very big ambitions, expected around 2026 or 2027 for the SEGA has signed a cooperation agreement with Microsoft. The title will use cloud technologies and Microsoft’s Azure servers, but SEGA has already indicated that this is not meant to mean exclusive status.
