It’s the buzzword these months in the tech industry, “Metaverse”. Personally, I see the same future as Kinect or Virtual Reality … an option for only a niche of users and which big tech wants to sell as the new coming of Christ. Only time will tell if this alternate world is the future or not, but of course, not few of them jump on the bandwagon, and among them also exorbitantly priced speculators.
Despite the best efforts of the big software and hardware companies, they still think it’s viable and that’s why we see new products coming to market. Microsoft and Qualcomm are two of the players who seem to have realized this is a way forward and worth investing in.
Qualcomm and Microsoft bet on the metaverse
For this reason, they announced at CES 2022 that the two companies will collaborate to create new chips designed for the Metaverse. The idea passes that these new products form new bridges between Microsoft Mesh and Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, making it easier for developers.
In the words of XR’s vice president and general manager of Qualcomm, Hugo Swart, we can read the following:
This collaboration reflects the next step in the two companies’ shared commitment to XR and the Metaverse. Qualcomm Technologies core XR strategy has always been to deliver the latest technology, specially designed XR chipsets, and to enable the ecosystem with our software platforms and hardware reference designs. We’re excited to work with Microsoft to help extend and evolve the adoption of AR hardware and software across the industry.
Ruben Caballero, Microsoft’s vice president for mixed reality, also spoke about the deal, validating Qualcomm’s announcement.
Our goal is to inspire and empower others to work collectively to develop the future metaverse, a future that is built on trust and innovation. With services like Microsoft Mesh, we are dedicated to delivering the most secure and comprehensive set of capabilities to generate metavers that blend the physical and digital worlds, ultimately delivering a shared sense of presence across all. devices. We look forward to working with Qualcomm Technologies to help the entire ecosystem unlock the Metaverse Promise.
When we see this association embodied in something, no idea, it seems that there is time for the moment and we must wait.
