I had never noticed or heard this during a game, so it took a column from the excellent Zach Lowe so I could learn that, but every time Jarrett Allen, the big man from Cleveland, scores at home, he gets a cute little goal zelda Sound effect played over the stadium speakers.
In a section titled “Jarrett Allen’s Zelda Love Affair” in his latest column, Lowe’s 10 Things for ESPN, Lowe says Allen is a big one zelda Fan, to the point where “he collects Zelda-related memorabilia; His favorite piece, he says, might be his 3D printout of a certain sign.” And his favorite game on the show? Despite being born in the same year that the game was first released, it is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
You can even see him at E3 in 2016 when he was still in college and getting hyped for it breath of the wild before release in March 2017:
Seems when Allen was back with the Brooklyn Nets (he was traded to Cleveland in January 2021) and staff first reached out to individual players for their sound effects requests — it’s pretty standard in the NBA, something after one bucket to play, and Mario
His request was for the icon zelda “Secret” sound effect you hear every time you solve a puzzle or uncover a hidden area. It’s a choice that followed him to Cleveland, and you can hear it in this highlight clip below (if it doesn’t autoplay in position for you, you need it at around 3:01).
NBA 2K22: The Kotaku Review
I can not anymore. This is the year that NBA 2K made me a joker
To be clear, the vulgarities of this year’s game are nothing New. There’s nothing here that will make long-time fans of the series double-check or tag that, cartoon-eyed bulging NBA 2K22 as something uniquely guilty, highlighted in a vacuum. That’s the thing about straws breaking a camel’s back, though. The one who finally makes it doesn’t look much different than the straws before it.
