A single manufacturer has seven smartphones in the top 10. Unsurprisingly, it is Apple.
The market research company Counterpoint Technology Market Research has looked at the sales figures of all smartphones worldwide for the year 2021. The top 10 best-selling smartphones come from just three manufacturers.
Of the three manufacturers, one is very dominant with a total of seven smartphones in the top 10: Apple. The Cupertino-based company’s smartphones are known to be very popular, with the iPhone 12 in first place, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max in second place.
But the iPhone 13, which was only released in the second half of 2021, also got off to a very good start. The latecomer can secure place 3 of the best-selling smartphones. The full list can be found here:

Budget smartphones are popular
Many cheaper smartphones were able to secure a place in the ranking. Here we can also find cell phones from other manufacturers. With the Galaxy A12, Samsung has only one mobile phone in the list. The manufacturer’s flagship Galaxy series, on the other hand, cannot be found.
The Chinese company Xiaomi joins the list as the third manufacturer. This one was also able to sell the most of its budget phones from the Redmi series. The Redmi 9A is in seventh place and the Redmi 9 is in tenth place.

According to Counterpoint, there were over 4,200 different smartphone models on the market last year. In addition, the top 3 models, i.e. the iPhone 12, 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13, are said to have accounted for 41 percent of Apple’s total sales.
At Xiaomi, across the ocean, sales of the Redmi 9 and Redmi 9A accounted for around 22 percent of all smartphones sold. The budget smartphones were mostly popular in China, India and Asia-Pacific.
Overall, the top 10 smartphones account for a larger portion of total sales compared to last year. This could be an indicator that manufacturers are focusing more on certain models instead of bringing as many different models onto the market as possible.
