@sleepinglion Yeah, to be fair to NLife, from looking at all the comments around the web, it seems that 50% of people are going “I found the Genesis/Megadrive Collection completely unplayable because of the lag” and the other 50% are going “I bought the Genesis/Megadrive Collection and it was such good value and I love it”. Clearly, the input lag, which to me is extremely noticeable, only affects those who are either very experienced in playing the games on original hardware or fpga/super accurate emulation on high spec machines, OR those who are beyond a certain skill level to the point where it makes a difference – people trying to get the best run, shave milliseconds off their run, combine bouncing from springs to enemies etc in precise patterns using muscle memory to play like a speedrunner. I don’t assume the reviewer on this site purposefully didn’t mention it, it just wasn’t noticeable to them for whatever reason. Maybe a more casual player just doing a blind playthrough from start to finish for fun, or indeed someone who has only ever played slightly dodgy emulated versions, doesn’t notice the lag, or maybe some just subconsciously adjust to it better.
As far as Origins goes, its not emulation, its ground up reprogrammed with a modern engine, like Mania was. Unless something goes hideously wrong, there won’t be any input lag at all. Should be just as smooth and responsive as Mania, touch wood.
[edit] I just checked and it was Damo who reviewed the Classics collection – certainly someone with true retro chops who will have played the originals to death. Again, I don’t think he would have purposefully not mentioned the lag, I respect his retro knowledge and integrity a lot. Must be that with his play style it wasn’t percievable to him, or perhaps because he played Sonic 1 & 2 so many times over the years, with this review he concentrated more on less common titles, perhaps in genres that would be less affected, like the numerous RPGs on there. But the lag is definitely there and makes it hard for me and seemingly quite a few others to play properly.
