It was now only a matter of time before VRR came to PS5. Already available on Xbox Series X and S, the feature is finally rolling out for its rival.
As promised last March, Sony will introduce variable refresh rate (VRR) support to PS5. But what is this function for? How do I activate it and what games are compatible? Here are all the first details.
VRR is coming to PS5, but what’s the point?
No more counting the days until VRR arrives on PS5. Long awaited by some gamers and recently teased by Sony, the feature is finally coming to the home console. Sony confirmed on the evening of April 25 that the VRR will be available this week on a date to be determined.
« On HDMI 2.1 and VRR compatible monitors and TVs, this option dynamically synchronizes the display refresh rate with the video output from the PS5 console “, explains the manufacturer in his blog post. In other words, the visual performance of PS5 games will be improved and the tear largely eliminated by reducing or even eliminating visual artifacts. They gain in fluidity, the graphics become sharper, the input latency is reduced, and the rendering of scenes becomes even more homogeneous.
The list of VRR compatible games
However, not all games will benefit immediately from the feature’s rollout. Previously released titles will need to be optimized with a patch, while future games may support VRR upon release. In the coming weeks, the following games will release a patch that adds support for it. The list should grow over the weeks as each developer works on a dedicated option:
- Astro’s playroom
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- DIRT 5
- godfall
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- tribes of Midgard
How do I enable VRR on PS5?
Once the update is deployed, VRR will be automatically enabled for compatible games. At least if you have a TV or display that supports the feature and has an HDMI 2.1 port. The option will nest itself in the system settings under “Display and Video” and can be deactivated at will.
And if your current game isn’t on the list, don’t panic. It’s entirely possible to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it yet. You shouldn’t expect optimizations of the same quality as those that have received a patch, but this feature can still improve the quality of some games. ” Results may vary depending on your TV, the game you are playing and the visual mode you have set “, the manufacturer states.
