recent, Riot Games Had some members of their team do an AMA on Reddit to discuss all things Valorant agents and game balance. Valorant’s character team came together to answer many player questions, and we got some interesting insights into the future of the game and its agents.
Some of the most enlightening news in the Reddit AMAs are about Phoenix and Cypher. The two oldest agents in the game, both admittedly far weaker than their new opponents. Seriously, who still plays Phoenix?
When asked if there were any plans to enhance Phoenix, character producer John Gorcic shared: “Early, yes, we’re working on Phoenix, but it’s too early to talk about the details of what it might bring. “
Gosicki continued, “Right now, we want to take the time to explore things from tweaking numbers to more. Unfortunately, we don’t have a solid ETA, and we want to take the time to find the right long-term location for Phoenix.”
So it sounds like we might have to wait a while to see Phoenix receive some much-needed TLC, and Cypher seems to be as well.
“Cypher has a similar situation [to Phoenix]We’re not ready to share details or dates, but he’s definitely on our radar,” said acting designer Jay Watford.
These problems are because Phoenix and Cypher have been replaced by new faces and the like. With the introduction of Fade, Sova nerf, and the upcoming Chamber nerf in Chapter 4, Chapter 3, it’s safe to say that Valorant metadata has really changed in the past few months alone, and it hasn’t been fixed.
Phoenix and Cypher may have less to offer as agents than their peers, and players have long been asking for reinforcements. So, it may be good news for a lot of players that the broker will get a buff sooner or later.
As it stands, we currently have multiple character classes in Valorant. There are Duelists, Controllers, Sentinels and Initiators. One user asked if the character team had plans to introduce a new class to Valorant.
“We’re definitely open to finding new classes in Valorant, but we want to make sure those classes are both healthy for the game and contribute to the tactical space in unique and meaningful ways,” Jay Watford said. “If/when we find a proxy that extends possible and check those boxes, we don’t want them to be restricted to fit the classes that currently exist.”
Jay ended up asking, “Which classes do you think would be fun to explore in the game?” This leads people to suggest classes like Infiltrator or more support.
What new features would you like to see in Valorant, and how would you like to see Agents buffed or nerfed in upcoming patches?
