After Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian must do penance – sort of. Because “Repentance” is the Europe translation of Pentiment, and that’s the name of the next game by Josh Sawyer, who was responsible for Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity as Design Director at Obsidian.
And Pentiment is not the game that we would have expected from Obsidian: not a role-playing game, but a crime adventure in medieval Upper Bavaria – with an unusual narrative twist.
In addition to the gaming interest, we, as the gaming editorial team based in Bavaria, of course feel the patriotic duty to learn more – from Josh Sawyer personally, who speaks to us in the Europe podcast!
The twist on Pentiment is that it doesn’t solve its criminal case itself: as itinerant artist Andreas Maler, we investigate a murder in a monastery (Hello, »The Name of the Rose«!), collect clues and ultimately accuse a culprit or a guilty party – yes Pentiment does not reveal whether our choice is correct.
Instead, the adventure shows the consequences of these (and other) decisions over a period of 25 years, since the plot begins in 1518 and only ends in 1543. For example, if we lead a capable but obnoxious herbalist (fictional example) to the scaffold – what will happen then change life in the monastery and in the nearby village?
This kind of storytelling may irritate crime fans who want their murder cases solved. However, we find it exciting how dynamic the story and how high the replay value will be. And that’s what we talk to Josh about in the podcast too.
