P’s lie The gameplay, shown live at gamescom’s opening night earlier this week, was one of the show’s highlights. Bloodborne fans in particular, go through it frame by frame, dissect it, and see how much it resembles FromSoftware’s unrivaled title.
While what we got was fairly brief in the grand scheme of things, some folks at gamescom could use a longer demo. Watching featured clips is one thing, but longer, unedited walkthroughs are what counts.
The video above from IGN provides the following: 12 minutes of unedited gameplay demoed. The inspiration for Bloodborne is immediately visible; from the era in which the game takes place, to the architecture and layout of places.
The UI is very soul-like, with different health and stamina bars, and a menu of weapons and items in the lower left corner. Even the damage numbers, status effect meter, lantern-like checkpoints, and general look are all heavily inspired by Bloodborne.
FromSoft games have a unique health recovery mechanic that allows players to restore some of their lost health if they hit an enemy quickly after being hit by themselves. P’s Lie has a similar mechanic, but it seems to only trigger after a block or parry attack.
The off-hand tool is the more interesting aspect of the video. These are attached to the character’s left arm and range from grappling ropes to cannons that deliver electric shocks. The enemy variety in the demo looks good, and players even encounter a boss and a mini-boss along the way.
The only problem I have with the video is that the sound is an echo, but that’s probably just a problem with the capture settings, not the game itself. Overall, this looks very promising, even beyond its bloody aspirations.
P’s Lies is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/s in 2023.
