EA has big plans for the future of Battlefield. Now the publisher is focusing a lot on the story and single-player campaigns of the shooter series – and is even founding its own development studio: Ridgeline Games, which Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto heads as game director.
At the same time, DICE loses its creative director: Lars Gustavsson is leaving the Battlefield and Battlefront developer after 22 years and was even in the community as a Mr. Battlefield
known. We provide you with all the information about the current developments at EA.
EA goes all out for the Battlefield story
Battlefield story(s): Story campaigns have played a varying role in Battlefield’s past. Battlefield 1 and 5, for example, told their plot through separate individual episodes – the so-called War Stories.
After that, with Battlefield 2042, the latest part completely dispensed with it and took a different approach. However, in our opinion, this story concept never really took off. You can read why exactly in the following article:

Battlefield 2042 has a huge story problem
Story becomes more important now: It has been known for a while that EA and DICE now want to focus on classic single-player campaigns. In June 2022, official job postings indicated that the Battlefield would again deliver a story campaign after 2042 – i.e. probably Battlefield 7.
Your own campaign studio: Now EA goes even further. With Ridgeline Games, a new development studio was launched that is fully focused on the narrative campaign
of the Battlefield brand. For now, EA remains somewhat cryptic as to exactly what that means.
For example, we don’t know if Ridgeline Games is developing its own story game in the Battlefield series or contributing the single-player campaign for DICE’s Battlefield 7. At least one thing is certain: Battlefield 2042 is not affected.

Incidentally, Marcus Lehto acts as game director and head of the studio. Known in the gaming industry as one of the co-creators of Halo, he left Bungie in 2012 to found his own studio, V1 Interactive. However, the development team’s only game, Disintegration, was pulled after just one year. In 2021 Lehto then switched to EA and now has his own studio with Ridgeline Games.

Battlefield ohne Mr. Battlefield: At the same time, Lars Gustavsson, one of EA’s most important DICE veterans, is leaving to pursue new challenges. Gustavsson was employed by the developer studio for 22 years and worked alongside Battlefield on games such as Mirror’s Edge and Star Wars: Battlefront.
Opposite to GameSpot Gustavsson personally commented on his departure:
I have dedicated a large part of my life to Battlefield and am very proud to have helped shape this brand into what it is today. However, I think it’s time for something new. Thank you for all your support over the years, especially to all the talented colleagues I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and also for all the love and support from the community.

At the moment, however, Gustavson is not revealing which projects and tasks he will devote himself to next.
This is how Battlefield continues
Here’s what’s happening right now in Battlefield 2042: Most recently, Battlefield 2042 started Season 2, which even let the number of games in the multiplayer shooter shoot up again. At the same time, a new option for Flashbangs is causing a lot of conversation in the community. The official trailer shows exactly what Season 2 of Battlefield 2042 has to offer:

The new part is said to have already received the green light from EA, relying on the old strengths of the series and thus omitting controversial elements from Battlefield 2042.
