The intro to the mega production The Rings of Power
has had a surprisingly emotional journey. The first teaser of the serieswhich many thought was the intro, was too unrealistic for many – although there there wasn’t even much CGI at work! Shortly before release a appeared Promo video that many also feared was the start of the episodes. Now that the first three episodes are out, we’ve seen the real intro… which isn’t exactly spectacular.
However, there is an idea behind the sandy intro that remained unclear until recently. What this is all about, we will clarify in the following lines. But if you’d rather know whether episode 3 of the Amazon production can pull the cart that many fans are stuck out of the mud, then read our review:

You can see different characters, formed from grains of sand that magically shift. In any case, it works like magic – because there is a scientific explanation for it.
Game designer Alexander King already knew the characters and shared his discovery on Twitter. The shapes are so-called Chladni sound figures.

Chladnic sound figures are created when very light objects such as sand are vibrated by sound on a thin surface. The phenomenon was discovered by the Europe physicist Ernst Forens Friedrich Chladni in 1787.
You can see an example of Chladni sound figures and how they work in the following video:

Sound figures not without reason in the intro
The intro’s creative director, Anthony Vitagliano, responded to King’s tweet and confirmed that these are Chladnian sound figures. On his team’s blog he also explains why they chose these patterns in the intro:
We were inspired by JRR Tolkien’s Ainur. Immortal, angelic beings who sing music so beautiful they created the world with the sounds. We came up with an intro that was “built with the world of sound”.
