CD Projekt Red has been riding a new wave of success with Cyberpunk 2077 in recent weeks. The number of players went through the roof (again) and at the same time Cyberpunk 2077 even blossomed into the most played single-player title on Steam – for various reasons.
CD Projekt Red has now shared an update on the sales figures for the role-playing game: As of this writing, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 20 million copies. The last update was in April 2022, when there was still talk of 18 million.

Accordingly, the release of patch 1.6, the start of the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the announcement of the big story DLC Phantom Liberty not only had a significant impact on the number of players.
All information about Phantom Liberty: What we know so far about the addon, for which even Keanu Reeves returns in the role of Johnny Silverhand, you can read in our overview. By the way, there is also a first trailer for Phantom Liberty to see:

For comparison: The Witcher 3 has sold over 40 million copies since its original release in May 2015. Cyberpunk 2077 was able to reach half of it after almost two years. So chances are good that Cyberpunk 2077 will overtake The Witcher 3 in the long run.
After all, CD Projekt Red also has a lot planned for the future of Cyberpunk 2077. In addition to the story DLC Phantom Liberty, further updates are planned that will revise the police system, hand-to-hand combat and car chases, for example.

The mood among players has also changed noticeably after the launch debacle at the end of 2020. The Steam reviews, for example, have long been positive and there is also much more praise than criticism in the fan forums.
At the same time, The Witcher 3 proved how a single-player role-playing game could always generate new players and increasing sales over the long term. Similar to Edgerunners, for example, the debut of the Witcher series with Henry Cavill led to new and old players getting excited about Geralt’s search for his foster daughter Ciri.
But beware: To be fair, however, it must be mentioned at this point that a lion’s share of Cyberpunk 2077’s sales figures came about at the launch of the role-playing game. After releasing on December 10, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 13.7 million copies by the New Year – it took the last 12 months, steady support and the Netflix series Edgerunners to reach 20 million.
Definitely impressive numbers. Time will tell whether Cyberpunk 2077 will eventually catch up with The Witcher 3 in terms of sales. At least one thing is certain: At least in terms of the number of simultaneous players on Steam, the cyberpunk role-playing game has already beaten its in-house competition twice.
By the way: Peter took a closer look at the comeback and the new hype surrounding Cyberpunk 2077. It’s best to take a look at his personal column for yourself, why the great sales and player numbers are a lesson that will not set a precedent:

What CD Projekt Red is planning for the future
Here’s how Cyberpunk 2077 continues: As already mentioned, CD Projekt Red not only announced the big story DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty, but also talked about upcoming updates. You can read exactly what is planned for patches after 1.6 in our corresponding article.
The Witcher 4 is also coming: After the release of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red should then focus more on the next witcher role-playing game. The Witcher: A New Saga Begins has already been officially announced, and several sequels are also being planned.
