rebirth revealed its latest role Apex LegendsCatalyst, reveals her backstory in a new animated short.
Catalyst, also known as Tressa Smith, is an “experienced shapeshifter and defense wizard” who, according to the game’s official website, “uses her extraordinary control of ferrofluids to manipulate the battlefield.” Briefly, titled “The Last Hope,” it shows her and a friend trying to save Cleo, one of Boreas’ moons, but they disagree on how to do it.
She seems to have a very witch vibe, albeit with a sci-fi twist, and a somewhat strong vibe overall. Catalyst was also seen chatting with Rampart as the two talked about some crystals the former was reading, which really heightened the witch feeling as she explained her backstory.
This newest character joins as part of the game’s 15th season, Eclipse, and it brings more than just a new character. A new map is apparently coming to the game, possibly Cleo itself, although it’s hard to glean from the game’s website. Gifts will also appear in the game, and you can give things like skins to your friends. While you can only do this by using Apex Coins, you can only give five gifts every 24 hours.
Of course, there will also be a new Battle Pass, as always, with daily and weekly challenges that will bring you some legendary skins, reactive weapon skins, and more.
GamesRadar also spoke with Respawn about the new character, the first trans woman to join the game. The developer is clearly working with GLAAD and its transgender staff to ensure that Catalyst respectfully represents the community.
Respawn announced it would be adding gifts earlier this year, as well as crossover progression, although the latter hasn’t been updated yet.
