The smart home sector is on the verge of a revolution. Matter will be a common platform for most manufacturers, which means that whether we prefer Google Home, Apple HomeKit or Amazon Alexa, all devices will be able to communicate with each other.

Google is already preparing for this future, with the Matter implementation already appearing in some aspects of Google Home, and that goes hand-in-hand with new features that expand the platform.

Google Home from the web

As part of these changes, starting today, the Google Home website will do more than just advertise the platform. Google has confirmed a complete renovation that will allow us to log in with our account to all the cameras we have.

The new web interface means that we no longer need the Google Home app on our mobile to be able to access installed cameras live. As it is a simple web page, we can access it from a modern browser (although we could not confirm compatibility with programs other than Google Chrome); and of course this implies that we can finally use Google Home from the computer.

The big advantage is the larger screen size compared to a mobile, which allows us to check the video of all the installed cameras at a glance; something particularly useful to instantly know if everything is fine with us, or to see who has arrived from several different angles. So we don’t need to buy a Google Nest Hub or the next Pixel tablet.

To access the new experience, simply enter home.google.com/home and sign in with our Google account. However, keep in mind that not everyone has access to this feature at the moment, and everything indicates that it is a progressive release.

Another limitation to keep in mind is that not all Google Home devices are supported. For the moment, only Google Nest cameras and the brand’s smart doorbells appear as accessible.

The new website means that Google Home “escapes” mobiles and tablets where it was limited. Now we can open the laptop anywhere and, as long as we have an internet connection, check the status of the cameras. Hopefully in the future we will have access to more types of smart devices and we can control them like on a mobile.
