Luto is the new title of first person psychological horror of Broken Bird Games, Spanish study, more specifically from the Canary Islands. The game will be released in 2023 and the studio released a PC demo during Steam Scream Fest. The test is called Luto Demo: The Choice and it’s an experience outside of the endgame, something in the style of PT or the demos of Resident Evil 7 at the time.
Mourning Demo: The Choice, Mechanics and the Leaf
The demo is very short and therefore has no save points. The process is very simple, we wake up in a house from which we must escape, or not, the decision is ours. We will find drawings that faithfully represent our actions during the game and we will solve a series of puzzles that will allow us to move forward. Something curious is that in the pause menu there is a help option, but we can’t use itwill tell us that we are not lost and that we do not need it.
As we go, we will meet the leaf. At first glance, this may seem simple, not scary or not dangerous, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I consider that it’s something very clever
The leaf has the function of deceiving the brain, it doesn’t allow you to see what’s underneath but you see the silhouette, you see that there is something and your brain immediately starts working. Can you imagine what there might be, the shape he has is more or less human, whether he has ax characteristics or not, and I assure you that your mind will tend to think about what scares you the most. As if that were not enough, in the few clashes that we will have with the character during the demo, he will move in different ways, whether walking, crawling on the ground or even climbing the wall, giving rise to define let alone what there may be below.
The Unreal Engine 5 and physics
also say that the leaf physics are spectacular, the movement of each fold could perfectly mimic that of real-world fabric. The same happens with a stuffed animal that we will find on more than one occasion, examining it and turning it over we will see how the physics are very well done.
The game started development with Unreal Engine 4, but the studio decided to make the jump to Unreal Engine 5. and this is something that is not only perceptible in physics. Graphics are at the level of a big budget titlethe textures are very good and the lighting is just as successful and well implemented, that’s what counts.
Cooked uses a very clever technique to provide an even more realistic experience. This is based on making the game look like it was recorded with a home camera. Grainy, imprecise camera movements are key. It takes us right back to those already classic Internet videos where someone records a ghost they’ve seen in their house, or going to explore an abandoned place. This is something that more and more games are doing and which without a doubt conveys a very successful sense of realism.
Something that doesn’t quite convince me are the black bands on the imageput the resolution that we always put we will see two black bands above and below, as if it were a film. I don’t know if this will be something we can d isable in the final game, but definitely having the option would be great.
In the demo, we also can’t touch graphics settings beyond resolution, textures, and Vsync.. We cannot disable effects such as motion blur or chromatic aberration. I repeat, at least in the demo.
Speaking of effects, a very successful one is depth of field. Looking around a corner or looking at something specific in the environment looks spectacular.
Luto’s sound section
An extremely important section of this type of game is the sound. The Luto demo barely has a soundtrack, you can hear something on the menu and nothing else. The soundtrack is important, yes, but what really makes the difference are the sounds. During the demo you can hear all kinds of sounds, chain movements, footsteps, leaf movements or some other moan. They are all very successful and we hear them when they play, no more, no less. Something remarkable is that in the frights of the demo you don’t hear the typical or similar violins with the volume turned up. Everything is based on the sounds that occur in the environment.
Luto is definitely…
Broken Bird Games has definitely achieved what it was looking for, grabbing attention and showing that Cooked it can be very scary. In the demo they show us a small part of it and also make their intentions very clear, to have a good time but bad at the same time. Waiting for the final version, which we remember, will be in 2023 for PC and PS5/4.
