Admittedly, if you look at the prices for Nvidia’s new RTX 4000 graphics cards, it can generally be difficult to speak of a good offer here. The RTX 4090 is only available from around 2,200 dollars and more, for the upcoming RTX 4080 with 16.0 GB VRAM Nvidia is already officially calling 1,469 dollars. In retail, their prices are more likely to end up at 1,600 dollars. But one thing is clear: These cards are extremely fast.
In the case of the RTX 4080 16GB, which has not yet been released, this is made clear by leaked gaming benchmarks in 4K resolution, albeit with certain limitations, since there are no direct comparison values. The FPS values appeared in the form of screenshots in the Chiphell forum. The thread has since been deleted, but the pictures are still with others Videocardz to see.
Apropos turned off
: You can find out in the following article why Nvidia first canceled the Geforce RTX 4080 with 12.0 GB and will soon be releasing it again:
Spectacularly canceled Nvidia graphics card may be making a return, but at what price?
The leaked benchmarks of the RTX 4080 with 16.0 GB usually show three-digit FPS values at maximum settings in 4K including ray tracing (if available). Only in the very demanding Cyberpunk 2077 is it enough as shown below only
for 83 FPS in 4K and 116 FPS in WQHD, with the upscaling technology DLSS also activated. AMD’s Ryzen 5 7600X was used as the CPU.
How are the values classified?
Since there are no direct comparison benchmarks with other GPUs such as the RTX 4090 from the same test system or leaker, the meaningfulness of the measurements is limited. But at least their integrated benchmarks were used in the tested games, with some clearly recognizable graphics settings.
This makes it possible, at least in some cases, to recreate the measurement conditions, which a user of the Chiphell forum promptly did with his RTX 4090 according to the Videocardz article. However, the Core i9 12900K was used as the CPU here, which can have an impact on performance despite the high 4K resolution with a GPU as fast as the RTX 4080.
RTX 4090 vs RTX 4080: The comparison values usually show a lead of the RTX 4090 of around 30 percent, which fits into the previously known picture. In Benchmarks by Nvidia itself the average lead for F1 2022, Flight Simulator and Spiderman without DLSS is 25 percent. Only A Plague Tale: Requiem is completely out of line with a lead of about 93 percent:
Will the RTX 4080 be a good deal for gamers?
According to the current status and based on the above values, it can be assumed that the RTX 4080 16GB will be a bit faster than the RTX 3090 Ti. The price of the RTX 3090 Ti is currently around 1,500 to 1,600 dollars. If the RTX 4080 is really available at a similar price, it would be a serious offer thanks to the support of DLSS 3.0.
Whether it is also worthwhile in your individual case depends heavily on which GPU you currently have and in which resolution and refresh rate you play. In general, in our opinion, the card is only really worthwhile for WQHD with three-digit FPS values or even more 4K and if you have a maximum GPU in the performance class of an RTX 3070 or RX 6800.
Basically, when changing the GPU, we recommend that it should be at least two, better still three performance classes above your current model. You can find out where your current model fits in here and which performance classes we are talking about in our large overview:

Over 60 GPUs in the large performance ranking
Last but not least, don’t forget: We still don’t know exactly how good AMD’s upcoming RX-7000 graphics cards will be. With prices of 999 and 899 US dollars respectively, the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT are at least clearly cheaper than the RTX 4080 with 16 GB.
In the end, however, performance will also be decisive in this comparison. They should appear on December 13, 2022, at the latest we will know more. You can expect tests for the respective release for both the RTX 4080 16 GB and the new RX-7000 cards on GameStar.de.
How do you rate the upcoming Geforce RTX 4080 with 16 GB? A welcome addition to the still very manageable RTX 4000 generation, a GPU that doesn’t interest you at all, or something in between? Feel free to write it in the comments!
