Anyone who has ever seen an OLED screen in action will probably find it difficult to switch to a classic LC display. Thanks to self-illuminating pixels, OLEDs shine with impressive contrasts and short response times, but they hardly play a role in the PC sector – but that could change soon. The latest example of this: MSI’s Project 491C.
Among other things via Instagram The gaming monitor presented relies on a combination that has never existed before. To be more precise, it is about a QD-OLED panel, the particularly wide aspect ratio of 32:9 and a refresh rate of 240 Hertz.
QD-OLED
stands for an OLED panel that also uses Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology. Among other things, this should mitigate certain disadvantages of OLED panels, such as the rather low brightness, and ensure better color reproduction.
At the same time, the GameStar editorial team has been enthusiastic about such monitors in widescreen format for a long time, as the following two articles show:
What else do we know about Project 491C?
Not too much, as it is only a teaser so far, but there is still some information. The monitor uses a curved panel, most likely with a diagonal of 49 inches. On the one hand, this is suggested by the name, on the other hand, it fits the screens that are already available in 32:9 format.
We don’t know the exact resolution yet, with this aspect ratio you can usually choose between 3840×1080 or 5120×1440. The latter would be preferable in favor of a higher pixel density and image sharpness, but it also places higher demands on the hardware.
More information, release and price: More details about the monitor will be available at CES 2023 in early January. MSI has already won one of the Innovation Awards presented there. When the screen will be on the market is still uncertain.
On the other hand, one thing is almost certain: the monitor is likely to be very expensive. The currently only available QD OLED monitor in Europey in the form of the Alienware AW3423DW (see the picture above) is currently around 1,300 dollars. We expect the MSI monitor to cost more than 2,000 dollars.
It should not go unmentioned that the new QD-OLED technology can potentially have its problems. This has caused criticism in connection with the Alienware screen in question, you can find out more about this in the following article:

What do you think of the new monitor from MSI? A real, new highlight in gaming screens, probably overpriced hardware that you don’t need or something in between? Feel free to write it in the comments!
