Game news A real challenger for Street Fighter 6? Project L, the LoL (League of Legends) fighting game, is terribly desirable
While Street Fighter 6 seems like the perfect choice to become the next big fighting game, Project L today discreetly arrives with gameplay… And what we can say is that the game is terribly desirable!
Project L, a fighting game at the height of Street Fighter 6?
While the versus versus fight took a bit of a hit in the early 2010s, the genre has been back in great shape for a while now. After Street Fighter 6 in 2016, Dragon Ball FighterZ in 2018 or Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, the genre will welcome some new greats. Note that a new Tekken is in the pipeline, but also that Street Fighter 6 is already announced as the big play of 2023, but that’s not all…
In 2019, Riot Games, the studio behind the game League of Legends, reveals that many other productions set in the LoL universe will see the light of day. Among the latter we note the existence of a particular project L.
If the title has been particularly discreet since its announcement with just a few excerpts here and there, Project L, the fighting game from Riot Games, is back today with a lengthy presentation video. The latter (available at the top of the article) presents in detail all the mechanics of the game. And as you can see, everything seems to be at the level of the masters of the genre.
What would a LoL game be without teamwork?
The lengthy video not only gave us a nice overview of the artistic direction of the software, which promises to be fabulous, but also allowed us to take a fresh look at the cast. As promised, therefore, we will find different characters well known to LoL fans, starting with Hex, one of the heroines of the Arcane series available on Netflix. We can also tell that Tom Cannon, the game’s executive producer, has spent a long time on this Illaoi
After Tom Cannon, it’s Shaun Rivera, the game’s game director, who picks up the microphone to tell us more about the gameplay. First, the game director points this out the Project L team has worked hard to make everything accessible to as many people as possible; Good news, especially since Versus Fighting is all too often geared towards a niche audience.
As you can see, Riot Games has done everything to make the movements of the different fighters fluid and intuitive. For example, in addition to the ability to jump agilely, it will be possible to dodge attacks or run or take steps backwards. But that’s not the most important thing in the end…
We originally developed Project L with the idea of making a 1v1 game where two champions enter the arena to claim victory. But about two years ago we decided to have a tag team. Shaun Rivera, Game Director
As you probably already know Project L chose to be a “tag team” in honor of the universe it hails from; In other words, it’s a team fighting game, like a Dragon Ball FighterZ.
We really feel like it gives us more space to create amazing moments. Shaun Rivera
During a battle, the player can summon a companion to perform a support attack or prolong a combo, but also perform a burst that allows stopping the enemy’s offensive or calling in a replacement.
Unfortunately, if everything is reassuring and shows that Project L is on the right track, we will have to wait again as the title does not yet have a release date.
