When we first saw the Tecno Phantom X2, all we could say at the time was that it was “ugly”; the leaked low-res images seemed to indicate that Tecno had simply placed a gigantic array of cameras on the back, haphazardly.

The device has finally been announced, and we have to say we were wrong about at least one thing: there’s a compelling reason the cameras are like this, although that doesn’t mean the phone is still ugly even in high-resolution images.

retractable camera
The most striking feature of the Phantom X2 Pro, and perhaps the only one worth mentioning, is the portrait camera, not only because of its high 50MP resolution, but also because it’s retractable. Indeed, when we activate it, the camera protrudes from the back of the mobilewhich allows us to take pictures with a 2.5x zoom, with an aperture of no less than f/1.5, something excellent for what we are used to in the sector, and more for a lens 65mm like this.
This aperture allows the Samsung 50MP sensor to get more light, and therefore better photos regardless of the situation or time of day. This camera allows us get a natural “bokeh” effect, unlike the vast majority of mobiles which simulate it with algorithms; We’re talking about that blurry effect in the background behind the subject we’re photographing, and it allows us to better separate the two parts of the photograph. And to all this we must add the 2.5x optical zoom.
Only the Pro model has this special camera; at least the main camera of the two models is also worth mentioning, since it is an RGBW sensor, with a white sub-pixel that allows to capture 60% more light, and that one of lenses is glass instead of plastic as usual.
Unfortunately, Tecno decided not to implement any optical stabilization, although at least all the cameras have autofocus, allowing the wide angle to be used as a macro camera.
With all this, it is perhaps explained that the set of cameras is in this position and with this design; in theory, by the mechanisms needed for the retractable camera, although perhaps something different could have been done. What has less explanation is that the rest of the mobile sections are so mediocre, with a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor that is not even the top of the range, although at least the 6.8 AMOLED screen inches should be good, use at least a 120Hz panel that covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
The Tecno Phantom X2 is currently only offered in Saudi Arabia, where it will cost 2,700 riyals (683 dollars), while the Pro model with pop-up camera will cost 3,500 riyals (885 dollars).
