Motorola is one of the big old names in smartphones, so it’s always interesting to see what it has to offer when new models are announced.
We’ve been impressed with the Edge 30 series and with rumors starting to surface regarding its successor, we’re rounding up all the news and details we know so far about the Motorola Edge 40 series, also known as the Moto X40.
When will the Motorola Edge 40 series be released?
Motorola has confirmed that it will launch the X40 series in China on December 15teasing a pair of phones in the poster.

Since the X30 line was eventually launched in the West as the Edge 30 series, it stands to reason that the X40 phones will eventually be known as the Edge 40.
This still leaves the question of when these models will launch as the Edge 40, but it’s highly likely to be at least a few months away. The Motorola Edge 30 range had a staggered release, and it may be the same with the next generation. Here’s when the Edge 30 models debuted:
As you can see, the 30 Pro was the first to launch, and we think it’s likely we’ll see the same again next time around.
How much will the Motorola Edge 40 cost?
We have yet to see any pricing details for the Motorola Edge 40 range. To give us an idea, we can look back on the previous generation. Here’s how the models in this range lined up:
- Motorola Edge 30 Neo – £349 / $399 (around $415)
- Motorola Edge 30 – $399 / £379 / $499
- Motorola Edge 30 Pro – $699 / $799 ( around £589)
- Motorola Edge 30 Ultra – £749 / $899 (around $889)
Motorola hasn’t released every model in every region (hence the different ballpark prices) and we suspect it may be a similar story with the Motorola Edge 40 series.
What features will we see in the Motorola Edge 40 series?
So far, we know little about the Edge 40 lineup, although Motorola has started to confirm some details.
The company has confirmed that the X40 – the model we plan to launch elsewhere as the Edge 40 Pro – will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and feature IP68 water and dust resistance.
In the launch poster, above, we can also see that there is of them phones in the series so far, and one of them doesn’t have a visible selfie camera cutout – suggesting that Motorola will include an under-display selfie camera on one model.
A few more details can be gleaned from an FCC listing for the Edge 40 Pro, which shows a device supporting 125W fast wired charging, with support for wireless and reverse charging as well. There seem to be two variants, one that offers a single SIM card and another that has both a physical SIM card and an eSIM.
The same phone appeared on Chinese certification site TENAA as X40. In this listing, there are images of the design, as well as more details on the hardware inside, with the model sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a 6.67-inch OLED display that has curved edges and a refresh rate of 144 Hz.

You can get a better look at this design in these renders created by leaker OnLeaks and shared with MySmartPrice based on the specs he’s found so far, which show a clearer look at the Pro phone’s likely design.
He adds that the phone will measure 161.3 x 73.9 x 8.6mm and feature a glass back with a metal frame.
The rear camera array contains three units: a 50Mp main shooter, allied with a 50Mp wide and 12Mp telephoto sensor. RAM will reportedly range from 8GB to 18GB, with storage from 128GB to 512GB. Interestingly, the device comes with a 5,000mAh battery and 68W charging, which is less than fast charging. 125 W on the FCC list. Could that mean they are two separate devices, or will charging vary by market?
