  • Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) has existed in the “Star Trek” universe for over 55 years.
  • In “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” it has now been officially confirmed for the first time that she is genetically enhanced.
  • Episode 3 of the new “Star Trek” series reveals that Una, or Number One as Pike usually calls her, is an Illyrian.

Episodes 3 and 4 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” have now also started in Germany on the Paramount+ streaming service. Episode 3 has a little surprise in store: And Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), also known as Number One, has been genetically enhanced and is an Illyrian. This confirmed a long-standing theory among fans.

The role of number one appeared in the pilot of “Spaceship Enterprise” and is therefore significantly older than “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. Back then, little was known about Pike’s first officer, but that’s about to change – officially and canonically!

That Number One is genetically enhanced was already described in a book from the 1980s. Unfortunately, this book does not belong to the official “Star Trek” universe, so this “fact” was more of an unofficial theory for fans. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” now continues this thought!

As an Ilylrian, Una lives on board the Enterprise in constant danger of being busted. Because Illyrians allow themselves to be biogenetically modified to better suit their environment, the Federation views them with suspicion. Illyrians will not be accepted into the Federation or Starfleet!

The reason for this lies in the Augments like Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), who, towards the end of the 20th century after genetic experiments, became tyrants who wanted to rule the world.

Thus, Starfleet fears Illyrians, but Una proves in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Episode 3 that she and her species pose no threat. Their motives for genetically modifying themselves are by no means despicable. Still, of course, Una had to lie to get into Starfleet.

When her secret is exposed, she prepares to leave Starfleet, but Captain Pike does not accept her resignation. He makes it clear to her that she doesn’t have to worry and that in the worst case he will deal with Starfleet himself because of it.

When Number One was played by Majel Barrett in the 1965 pilot, “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry had no intention of explaining her exact background. Since those responsible at the station didn’t want a woman in a managerial position on the bridge anyway, Roddenberry didn’t have a chance to expand number one any further.

We’ll tell you how you can already see the first “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season in full in Germany. We also list all the new films and series from the “Star Trek” universe that await you in the next few years. For a marathon we provide you with the right “Star Trek” order!
