Avatar 2 The Way of Water records a nice score, but we’re far from the record we could have expected.
Avatar 2 The Way of Water, James Cameron’s event film, has just hit theaters this Wednesday 14th December and the first results have just arrived. The start at the French box office is solid, but is marred by the soccer World Cup. Luckily, the rest of the world is there to raise the bar.
Avatar 2 starts off strong, but not too much
While France beat Morocco on December 14th, James Cameron’s blockbuster invaded our dark rooms with its 3 hours and 12 minutes of pure visual delirium. The much-anticipated Avatar 2: The Way of Water was also quite shaken by the performance of our footballers, because if the film started well above the competition, that first day ended mainly in semi-failure.
avatar 2 actually managed to register about 250,000 viewers according to the website BoxOfficePro. A very good result, far ahead Ernest and Celestine, the Journey to Charabie and its 70,000 seats. However, it is still much less than the first avatar which drew more than 304,000 viewers on its first day. So we are a long way from the long-awaited record. A difference that would be due in particular to the transmission of the World Cup game France – Morocco on the same day.
All is far from lost, however, and it’s worth noting that these are only estimates given Disney’s decision not to release actual numbers until Sunday. We’ll see it a little more clearly then. Anyhow, the film should still be a hit, as expected, and has already grossed over $15.8 million at the worldwide box office, which is not bad at all for a first day.
The film has everyone’s interest going as James Cameron has been busting the piggy bank for his next films and if the money doesn’t top up the coffers quickly the latter will have no choice but to get his license on the third film that hits theatres is to come, to lock down by December 2024 if all goes well.
