The developers behind Genshin Impact have published a blog post warning players against using third-party sites and services as users report logging into phishing sites from unknown sources.
Genshin Impact is a hugely popular gacha RPG built around acquiring an in-game currency called primo gems at its core. Using primo gems, players can pay to buy spins on wish banners, which contain weapons and characters.
Due to the very low drop rate of certain characters on wish banners, you’ll need a lot of gems to ensure you get the character you want. Primo gems can of course be purchased for real money, resulting in high price tags for accounts with large numbers of rare characters in the real world, and a black market around online games.
Clearly, there are dangers in giving account details to unofficial sites and services, especially those operating on the primo gems black market. Your account may be phished, causing you to lose all in-game assets. This is apparently the source of the suspicious activity on the accounts that the Hoyoverse team discovered.
It wrote in a blog post: “During the process of checking accounts with potential security risks, we found that many of them logged into third-party websites and applications of unknown origin. At the same time, we continue to crack down on illegal phishing websites and strengthen account security through technical means. .”
To help prevent this from happening, Hoyoverse offers some typical tips, such as don’t use these sites in the first place, don’t give out account details, and don’t use third-party plugins. So not exactly groundbreaking advice, but still all good advice.
This isn’t the first time Genshin Impact has had security issues in recent memory. It wasn’t until last year that hackers began abusing the game’s anti-cheat features to blackmail players’ operating systems. Faced with this, losing your account by using a dodgy site doesn’t seem so bad, at least for those of us who don’t have great value collectibles.
