Last year AMD released the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It differed from the Ryzen 7 5800X with a lower clock speed and a new 3D V-Cache. The 3D V-Cache, which is 96MB, is three times the size of the 5800X’s L3 cache.
This difference ensures about 20 percent higher performance, especially in games. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D often finishes better than expensive models like the Core i9 12900K from Intel. Coupled with the recent price drops, this potentially makes it a very attractive CPU.
A lot has happened at the price
The AMD Ryzen 5800X3D was launched in April last year at a cost of 489 dollars. Since then, the price has steadily decreased. On 10/24/22 there was probably a particularly strong fall from 419 to 356 dollars.
Since then, the price has regularly fluctuated around around 360 dollars. The current price of 344 dollars represents the lowest price so far in 2023. The processor was only cheaper in November 2202.
Is the 5800X3D worth it as a gamer CPU?
In his test for the release of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nils was able to show that the competition from Intel, in particular the said i9 12900K, is slower than the Ryzen processor in most games. The Intel processor was only ahead in a few games like Anno 1800.

AMD knocks Intel off the gaming throne with a vengeance
A similar ranking was no longer shown in the Cinebench R23 test. This is where the Intel CPU benefits from the additional threads: it has a total of 24 of them, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D just
over 16. The 5800X3D shines above all in games, even if it is anything but slow in applications.
Even in a duel with AMD’s new Ryzen 7000 CPUs, the 5800X3D does very well in games. He’s practically as fast. Only Intel’s Core i 13000 generation, which is also new, can set itself apart a bit, as our test of the Core i5 13600K showed, among other things.
Since the AM4 platform will no longer be continued by AMD with fresh CPUs, the 5800X3D is primarily recommended as an upgrade for an existing and older AM4 system. On the other hand, if you want to buy completely new, both the Core i5 13600K and the Ryzen 7 7700X at a similar price with support for the new memory standard DDR5 are also good choices.
Either way, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is still a very good CPU for a gaming PC in 2023, especially considering the steadily decreasing price. You can find more alternatives to the CPU in the following article: Purchase advice for processors – CPU comparison with AMD and Intel.
