The update to iOS 16 brought many innovations that noticeably improved the operating system both visually and functionally. Anyone hoping for a similarly big update for iOS 17 could be disappointed this year.
The reason is several reports from Bloomberg and leakers such as LeaksApplePro. The latter now wants more details about the iOS 17 code. Basically, not all of the information mentioned is new, but it confirms previous fears: Apple will invest fewer resources in the development of iOS 17 in 2023.
The reason lies in the development of the upcoming mixed reality headset. The first version is to be presented to the public this year.
Apple iOS 17 comes with the iPhone 15
The latest update for Apple smartphones is to appear with the iPhone 15 series and is primarily designed for stability and efficiency. New functions will probably still be integrated into the new software. Minor changes affect the navigation of the Music app and adjustments to the Mail, Reminders and Files app. The Home and Where Is? applications should probably receive the biggest innovations.
By far the most important integration will be the compatibility with the mixed reality headset. It will apparently be an app that interfaces with the XR headset, much like the Apple Watch, only richer.
According to the leaker, an iPhone 15 with USB-C is almost certain. All four models should receive the standard, but the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra should be the only ones with USB 3.2 and thus enable higher data transfers. The cheaper iPhones stick to the transfer speed of USB 2.0 (480 MB/s).
iPhone 15 Ultra with better camera (software)?
A small but not unimportant detail can be read in the lines of the AppleLeaksPro article. Accordingly, the iPhone 15 Ultra or Max should not only boast a better camera, but also better image processing software.
The leaker also adds that the chip in the iPhone 15 Ultra can be pushed more, than the iPhone 15 Pro. Whether these changes will really happen remains to be seen until the keynote, which is expected to be in September. If we believe the rumors so far, Apple will not only differentiate the Pro series from the standard models, but also want to highlight the iPhone 15 Ultra.
