Shadowy Skirmishes is the latest Giovanni research task in Pokemon Go.
It makes its debut in February 2023 as part of the Crackling Voltage event and ends with an encounter and an opportunity to catch Shadow Registeel.
Shadowy Skirmishes is part of a long line of Giovanni research quests that began in 2019 with A Troubling Situation. If Shadowy Skirmishes does not appear, first complete the latest Giovanni quest in your quest log – the previous one was Ultra Beast Protection Efforts from November 2022 – for this new quest to become available.
The second half of the Crackling Voltage event also brings changes to Eggs, Shadow Pokémon, and Field Research, which will be active until the end of the event Sunday February 5 at 23:59 local time
Shadowy Skirmishes tasks and rewards
The Shadowy Skirmishes special research can be unlocked until the next Giovanni quest and highlighted Shadow Legendary Encounter arrives in three to four months. Once unlocked, there is no time limit to complete the quest.

- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts (Helioptile encounter)
- Make 3 nice curveball throws in a row (Helioptile encounter)
- Earn 2 candies while exploring with your buddy (Helioptile encounter)
Reward: 2,000 XP, 15 Poké Balls, 10 Revives
Step 2 of 5
- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts (10 Hyper Potions)
- Catch 4 Shadow Pokémon ( 10 Poké Balls)
- Purify 2 Shadow Pokémon (10 Pinap Berries)
Reward: 2,000 XP, 15 Big Balls, 1 Missile Radar
Step 3 of 5
- Defeat the leader of Team Go Rocket Sierra (1,500 XP)
- Defeat Team Go Rocket’s leader’s cliff (1,500 XP)
- Defeat Team Go Rocket leader Arlo (1500 XP)
Reward: 2,500 XP, 1,000 Stardust, 1 Super Missile Radar
Step 4 of 5
- Find the boss of Team Go Rocket (max 5 potions)
- Defeat the Boss of Team Go Rocket (20 Ultra Balls)
- Defeat Team Go Rocket Boss (max 5 revives)
Reward: 3,000 XP, 1 Lucky Egg, 2 Golden Razz Berries
You can catch the last Shadow Pokemon in Giovanni’s lineup once you’ve used your Super Rocket Radar. This depends on when you play the quest; from February 2023 until the debut of the next Giovanni quest this will be Shadow Registeel

Team Go Rocket Take-Over event is changing
In addition to the above quest steps, there will also be a Team Go Rocket Take-Over bis in the second half of the Crackling Voltage event Sunday February 5 at 23:59 local timewith the following changes:
- Improved Team Go Rocket balloon spawns and PokéStop encounters
- Shadow Pokémon can forget about Charged Attack Frustration with a Charged TM
- Rocket Grunts are changing their Shadow Pokémon lineups, including Alolan Vulpix, Spoink, Blitzle, Joltik, and more
- Frontrunners Sierra, Cliff, and Arlo change their team rosters
- New field research with Mysterious Component reward (specific task unknown at the time of writing)
