In Victoria 3 we focus on efficiency and lead a state into what we hope will be a bright future. Apparently, this meets with a lot of approval, because Victoria 3 itself is currently leading its publisher Paradox Interactive to success. In the case of a publisher, success means first and foremost: a lot of income.
That’s exactly what the Swedes were apparently able to generate in abundance last year. As can be seen in a recently published financial report, Paradox was able to achieve many of its goals and is apparently on a very promising path.
Achievements despite great challenges
Without boring you too much with hard numbers, the report naturally focused primarily on income, profits and expenses. Arguably the most notable of these are fourth-quarter and year-to-date gains. Accordingly, significantly more remained at the end compared to the previous year.
- In the fourth quarter, profit rose 65 percent to SEK 580 million
- For the year as a whole, a profit increase of 189 percent to 887 million Swedish crowns was achieved.
This is particularly surprising given that Paradox has been suffering from growing pains for the past few years. The publisher has dared some experiments in order to be able to position itself financially better for the future. We discussed this development and its reasons in the podcast at the end of 2021:

Paradox is in crisis, but that could be good for us
CEO Fredrik Wester also addressed the difficulties at the beginning of the year in his commentary on the financial report. In it he writes:
We had some challenges ahead of us in 2022. Over the last year our biggest problems have been consistent high quality, high release frequency and cost control. Territories that are at the core of any well-functioning gaming company.
At the end of the year it can be seen that our efforts have yielded a very good return. We had good release quality, worked hard on the high release frequency and implemented important efficiency improvements.

Many games have contributed to this success, but last year’s flagship was the strategy game Victoria 3. According to Wester, despite the company’s and fans’ high expectations, Vicky 3 has achieved all of its goals. The strategy game also excelled in our test:

Finally, Paradox is very optimistic about the future. In order to maintain the current trend, many more DLCs are to be released and thus recurring income will be increased. Additionally, the publisher has a lot of new games in the pipeline that are still being worked on. There is talk of 15 new games in total – but this also includes mobile games and games from external development studios.
