Organizers of the Game Developers Conference postponed GDC 2020 into the summer.
The annual meeting in San Francisco is scheduled for the week of March 16, but GDC 2020 Organizers have postponed the event until summer.
The official notice reads: "After close consultation with our partners in the global game development industry and community, we made a difficult decision to postpone the March game developer conference."
"In the past year, we have worked with the advisory board, speakers, exhibitors and event partners to prepare for the exhibition and we are really frustrated and disappointed because we cannot receive you now.
"We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussion and encouragement. As everyone is reminding us, when the community comes together and makes a connection on GDC, great things happen. So we are completely We plan to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will work with our partners to determine details and share more information about our plans in the coming weeks. "
Organizers plan to host a series of GDC 2020 lectures, independent game festivals and GDC awards via Twitch within one week of the event.
No reason for the delay was provided, but because of concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus, many companies skipped the show, so the announcement was not surprising. Activision Blizzard, Unity, Amazon, Sony, Epic Games, Microsoft, etc. have recently announced that the show will be skipped this year because employee safety is paramount. We imagine the organizers of GDC feel the same way, and want to prioritize security.
As of Friday, the number of people infected with the virus worldwide was about 83,000. The virus should be blamed on 2,800 deaths, most of which occurred in China.
