house of the dragon is getting a lot more dragons in its second season, according to showrunner Ryan Condal. On a Tuesday Awards Dinner Visited by several of the show’s cast members and series writer George RR Martin himself, Condal confirmed that the show’s second season will add five new dragons to the lineup already featured on the show.
While Condal didn’t elaborate much on the identity or riders of these five dragons, his comment could still provide a clear indication of a plot from Martin’s novels that might be relevant in Season 2. house of the dragon has adapted and fleshed out the story set out in Martin’s Game of Thrones prehistory book Fire & Blood
[Ed. note: This story contains possible spoilers for season 2 of House of the Dragon and definite spoilers for Fire & Blood.]
While there are certainly many ways Condal could be talking about five dragons, especially if they aren’t all battle dragons, it’s very likely that he’s talking about dragons with key roles in the book. The most important in the story are the wild dragons.
In fire & blood, On Dragonstone, the ancestral island of House Targaryen, three ferocious dragons roam, ready to pounce and eat anything unfortunate enough to get in their way. These three dragons are Sheepstealer, Gray Ghost and the Cannibal – so named because it has eaten so many other dragons, which is rare for its species.
While it wouldn’t be fair to the show to reveal how important these creatures are to the story, what happens to them, or who ends up riding them (or not), it’s worth noting that they’re incredibly important to the The Song of Ice and Fire” by Martin. If Condal is planning to include them in the show, it suggests that he is advancing the plot of the series’ Targaryen Civil War, bringing us closer to aerial dragon combat and open warfare known as the Dance of the Dragons. The show’s first season features only a brief segment of the book, leaving the war’s greatest battles for subsequent seasons.
Other dragons that Condal may be referring to include among others Fire & Blood‘S Tessario and Moondancer which would round off the overall picture nicely. These two are both family dragons in the Targaryens’ arsenal.
While Condal’s “five new dragons” reference is only a meager allusion to it house of the dragon Fans, it’s probably as good as we’re going to get for a while. There’s no official word on a release date for the show’s second season just yet, meaning it won’t likely arrive until 2024 at the earliest. In case you need a little more comfort, Martin did mention that he wasn’t there house of the dragon discontinued, mainly because he’s working on a new book that you may have heard of.
