While Apple is supposed to launch a 15-inch MacBook Air in the next few months, a new report claims an even bigger upgrade is in store for the 13-inch model.
Accord ing to Korean company The Elec (translation), Apple turned to Samsung Display as the maker of the MacBook Air’s OLED display, which was rumored to arrive in late 2024. The Elec cites a 13 screen, 3-inch in development, which is the size used in the M1 model from 2020. Apple moved to a larger 13.6-inch screen when it introduced the M2 model in 2022.
However, there may be a reason for this. The Elec reports that the display has “a strong testing nature for the mass production of OLED for the upcoming MacBook Pro.” This could mean that the 13.3-inch model will never reach production.
Previous rumors claimed that the MacBook Pro would be the first laptop to switch to OLED displays. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros currently use Apple’s XDR LED technology with HDR and high refresh rate ProMotion.
The Elec claims that Apple also tested a Samsung OLED panel for the 10.9-inch iPad Air before halting the project in September 2021. The publication states that Apple ultimately killed the project due to volume and volume issues. cost, but still plans to release an iPad Pro OLED in 2024.
The two processes, however, are different. The Elec reports that the iPad Pro’s OLED display will use Samsung’s dual-stack method that stacks two light-emitting layers, while the MacBook Air’s display uses a single-stack method.
Apple is rumored to be releasing a new 15-inch MacBook Air this spring, but that model will likely use the same LCD technology as the 13.6-inch model.
