The smartwatch sector hasn’t been the same since the launch of Wear OS 3. For the first time, Google’s platform has a real rival to Watch OS on its hands, and releases like the Pixel Watch or the Galaxy Watch 5 prove it. But there is still room for improvement.
New Wear OS 4
The new Wear OS 4 announced today is just that, an improvement, not an unnecessary revolution. For the most part, it’s an identical system to Wear OS 3, but it brings important new features and many of them have been requested by users themselves.

For example, Wear OS 4 is much more customizable than the current version, thanks in large part to new format of watch faces, which will allow its creation and sale through the Google Play Store. The new format does not require programming knowledge, but it offers great potential judging by the examples that Google has shown; the dials can now be completely different from those that equip our watch by default, with flashy effects and different types of data displayed. We will also have a sphere editor integrated directly into the system.

New apps will be a great reason to switch to Wear OS, and that’s because Google has finally listened to users and will launch new Gmail and Calendar apps for Wear OS. In Gmail we will be able to see our inbox and read the emails received, and we will even be able to send quick replies without having to pick up our mobile. And in Calendar we can see what events await us and perform tasks from Google Task.
To this we must add that more and more developers are betting on Wear OS. As we expected, WhatsApp will arrive on Wear OS, with an application that will allow us to do many things that we can do on our mobile, such as starting a conversation, sending audio or answering calls. Existing applications will also be improved, such as the Spotify application which will allow us to easily play new episodes of podcasts.

Wear OS will also receive internal improvements that will extend the battery life of watches and should make current models faster. It will also recognize our voice better using voice to text, and it will be easier to remake a watch by allowing us to make backup copies and transfer our settings and data to the new one.
