E-ink displays are very popular in e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle for one simple reason: they offer a very similar experience to traditional paper. But that doesn’t mean they’re limited to these types of devices.
In recent years we have seen many advances in e-ink technology, to the point where it has been possible to implement it in other formats. Today a new type of device arrives in Europe, which is not a cell phone or a book reader, it is all this and much more, thanks to the power of Android.
It is called BOOX Palma and it is the first handheld device from the manufacturer that we know in Europe for e-ink tablets and their e-ink color screens. But this version may be the most revolutionary yet.
The mobile with electronic ink screen
At first glance, the BOOX Palma looks like a simple smartphone, until you realize that uses a 6.13-inch eInk (electronic ink) display, with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch. In other words, it is as user-friendly to us as an e-book reader, but it has the same potential and format as a mobile phone.
And the BOOX Palma not only works with the Android operating system, but it is also fully compatible with the Google Play Store; so that we can install the same applications that we have on a conventional mobile phone. This is what makes this device much more than a “simple” eBook, the potential of apps like Gmail, WhatsApp, Spotify, etc..

That it is a cell phone is clear when we see that the rear has a 16 Mpx camera, which promises to be able to scan documents and convert them to digital format to read them directly on the screen. The interface has been adapted for the e-ink display, with a home screen with widgets displaying notifications and messages. And BOOX has promised three years of firmware updates that will bring new features to the device.
Of course, it is still an eBook, and in this sense it does not seem to have much to envy of the best, with compatibility with 18 formats (including the most used, epub).

It’s also designed to be worn comfortably during our long reading sessions, with adjustable two-tone backlighting and an anti-glare display, plus a comfortable grip with a textured back and water protection. For storage, it has 128 GB internal which can be expanded with a microSD card.
