The series implementation of The Last of Us hit like a bomb and not only convinced the huge community, but also critics. The anticipation for season 2 is correspondingly high – but now there is a small damper.
The second season of “The Last of Us” on the US broadcaster HBO has already been confirmed, but work on this is on hold for the time being. As has now become known, this project is also affected by the Writers Guild of America strike, which has been going on for two weeks.
Due to the strike, the productions of several well-known TV productions are currently on hold. These include numerous prominent formats such as “Stranger Things” from Netflix, “Andor” from Disney or the recently confirmed new Game of Thrones spin-off. From now on you can also count “The Last of Us” among the productions directly affected by the strike, so it is unclear whether the original schedule for the release of Season 2 can be met.
How Variety reported, casting for the second season of the post-apocalyptic series was canceled due to the strike. Reason: Neither Craig Mazin, the showrunner of the series, nor co-creator Neil Druckmann are currently doing their jobs and are joining the union in this respect.
Earlier this week, the casting team invited actors to read lines of dialogue from the 2020 sequel The Last of Us: Part II, giving them a chance to appear in the sequel. The fact that the lines of text were taken directly from the game is also due to the fact that there is currently no script for Season 2 of the series itself. Such is not to be expected for the time being, because Mazin is on strike with the other members of the Writers Guild of America for better working and payment conditions – and he wrote the majority of the episodes in Season 1.
The strike is aimed at higher wages and generally better wage standards among themselves. The future use of artificial intelligence when creating scripts is also an issue.
Prior to the work stoppage, The Last of Us Season 2 was scheduled to start filming in Vancouver in early 2024 and be completed by the end of 2024. A publication was planned for the beginning of 2025 – whether that will remain the case will depend above all on the duration of the strike.
