PUBG: Battlegrounds changes the rules around player deaths in Battle Royale and introduces a new revive system called Recall to the game. The mechanic allows players to revive a dead teammate and helps “alleviate the sense of frustration you feel when you die in team play.” PUBG: Battlegrounds says developer PUBG Studios.
PUBG Studios is also bringing official clan support PUBG: Battlegrounds with Patch 23.2.
PUBG: BattlegroundsThe new recall system is mostly straightforward, with the necessary level of risk and rarity that such an influential change demands. Here’s how it works: Players must purchase an item called the “Blue Chip” which is placed in a player’s death box in order to revive them. They must then take that chip to a Blue Chip Tower location or use a rare item called a Transmitter to summon their dead teammate back into play. Players can snatch enemies’ blue chips from a death box to prevent them from respawning.
The recall is initially limited to PUBG: Battlegrounds‘ Larger maps: Erangel, Miramar and Deston. You can read the full breakdown of the rules for recalls, blue chip towers and broadcasters here Krafton’s official patch notes
The other major feature in patch 23.2 is clans, which offers PUBG: Battlegrounds players a new level progression system. Up to 100 players can join a clan, which offers XP and Battle Points (BP) bonuses when playing with clan members. Forming a clan requires Plus status and costs 15,000 BP, but joining a clan is virtually free.
In an email interview with PUBG Studios Production Managers Taehyun Kim and Sangkyun Kim, the developers explained more about the impact of Recall and Clans on PUBG: Battlegrounds. The interview follows.
Polygon: What led to the decision to implement Recall? Was that a technical challenge for the team?
Taehyun Kim: We decided to introduce the new recall system, similar to the Comeback BR, to give those eliminated early in a game a second chance and reduce the frustration that often accompanies deaths during team play. We hope Recall will encourage more dynamic, strategic gameplay with more variables and a wider range of gaming experiences.
Unlike Comeback BR, which requires you to secure your own second chance, in Recall your ability to rejoin the game is entirely dependent on your remaining teammates. Their role is crucial in this system, which we believe will make the gameplay more accessible, especially for less experienced players.
Have you seen Recall change the flow or outcome of games in testing?
Taehyun Kim: In our internal testing, we’ve often observed scenarios where a near-defeated team managed to get all of their teammates back in the game and then put on strong performances.
We also noticed more dynamic and strategic gameplay scenarios near Blue Chip Towers. For example, a team attempting to recall a teammate would sometimes be completely eliminated after a bitter battle near the tower. Alternatively, enemies would specifically target a player who has just been recalled.
Approximately how many blue chip towers appear per stage or game?
Taehyun Kim: Blue chip towers appear randomly on the map, with approximately 22 towers spawning regardless of phase or game.
However, your ability to use these towers depends on the plane’s trajectory and the position of the circle.
What are the rules for spawning blue chip channels? How common are they?
Taehyun Kim: The Blue Chip Transmitter is a high value item, so it will be extremely rare on the map. If luck does not benefit players, it is possible that no one will be able to use it throughout an entire game. Its rarity is comparable to that of the flare gun.
The clan system seems to be a huge increase in players’ XP/BP earning – why such a high incentive?
Sankyun Kim: Clan benefits are obtained by playing in teams with your clan members. Playing together will give you a double XP bonus that will help you increase your clan level faster, as well as a 30% BP boost.
PUBG: Battlegrounds It’s more fun when you play it together. Because of this, we decided to further develop the clan system to make it easier for players to find teammates.
To make this easier, we offer various incentives to encourage players to play with their clanmates. Playing together will give you clan XP as a clan member and a BP boost as a single player. This agreement is intended to benefit both the clan and individual players.
For further clarification, Clan XP is strictly for clan leveling and not for Survival Mastery. Survival Mastery level is a measure of an individual player’s reputation and honor, so we have chosen not to include it in Clan Perks.
Do you have a roadmap for future clan development?
Sankyun Kim: While we haven’t made any concrete decisions yet, there are a few ideas we’d like to explore.
The current clan system is based on the minimum possible specifications as we had to implement it quickly. Therefore, in the future we plan to implement features that we initially had to rule out, such as an advanced clan search feature.
We also believe that a clan’s sustainability depends on its members being able to develop a sense of belonging. With that in mind, we’re considering various fun elements that could potentially increase the sense of community among clan members.
