long, long ago, from software It used to be pretty cool. It’s a name you’ll see on something you buy from a stinking private game store down an alley. Maybe you caught a glimpse of some cool robot or weird monster in a quarter-page paragraph of the PS2 Magazine’s preview section, and that’s all you heard until the game was unceremoniously localized a year later. Culture – usually a 5 or 6 from most publications that aren’t interested in such things. The indie game boom is still a long way off, and the oddest things to catch mainstream attention between FIFA and platformers are occasional final fantasy.
For sweaty zealots, though, FromSoftware is the guarantee of the absolute filth they crave. Esoteric system. Player hostility. The muddy, ugly graphics are designed to scare the underdogs away. From the Playstation 1 to the Playstation 3, FromSoftware is known for its various franchises, very niche, rock hard video games for cool and sexy weirdos.

The absolute king of them is armor core – a mech simulator that makes the dream of piloting a giant robot as exciting as getting an MOT on a Vauxhall Nova in ’89. Armored Core is a franchise that completely rejects the “wow, cool robot” aspect of the genre, in favor of forcing players to think about weight distribution and the inevitable entanglement of technological development with the military-industrial complex. It’s in Armored Core that FromSoftware is all about – taking a theme that a 12-year-old boy thinks is awesome and showing that it’s actually a miserable, soul-destroying chore. It controls like a piece of shit.
Then dark soul Came out and ruined FromSoftware and video games forever.Cool enough kids for too many people to realize it’s basically okay demon soul That said, it’s ready to be the studio’s breakout hit when its spiritual successor arrives. It’s huge. Everyone is playing it. Normal, well-adjusted adults are playing it. Celebrities are playing it. They talk about it all the time. It’s horrible, not least because it’s by far one of the least fun things they’ve ever done. But history declares it such a perfect, unrivaled masterpiece that it’s the only thing the developer will make for more than a decade.it becomes the only thing a lot of
elder ring FromSoftware, an entity known for its ugly games, was a real coup de grace for a niche market. A massive and beautiful world built on a lore developed by one of the world’s greatest authors, offering full-page previews and years of lavish PR. An open world game revolving around big characters is the most boring design concept in existence. It’s a mix of every idea that’s currently mainstream and boring. This is basically a Assassin’s Creed games, real 6. Of course, it’s one of the biggest video games of all time, making more money and getting more plaudits than can really be comprehended.
So I was genuinely surprised to hear that FromSoft’s next game would be the belated return of Armored Core, something 14 or so game journalists have been asking for over the span of two console generations. Not only that, but the director made it clear that the mission-based linear structure of the rest of the series will be maintained. The game is still full of menus. There’s always the fear that if AC does come back, it’ll be a grotesque armored soul – everything flattened without fun, making the series in demand to appease the masses who really like to lock down the big guy and roll him around.
This is the first time the studio has taken a real risk in years. Following a delightful, expansive RPG full of beautiful trees and waterfalls, followed by a dull linear shooter full of metal and monotony, is the kind of move a cool freaky weirdo game developer would make . This is the first time in a long time that FromSoftware has had a chance to be cool again. The absolute best case scenario is Armored Core 6 getting 50% and 60% from the mainstream press, and it absolutely knocks back the fanbase they’ve built up over the past decade. If the majority of gamers resent the inability to lock onto a big guy and roll around him, FromSoftware may finally have a chance to grow – back to where they were in their prime (2004).
FromSoftware shouldn’t earn a 10 out of 10 at all. Its name should not be compared to the glitzy annual game show with its huge corporate sponsors and celebrity audience. It does feel like a conscious decision, even FromSoftware is tired of Soulsbornes at this point. It’s ready to sneak back into the shadows and start making dense ninja simulators for trench coats. If Armored Core 6 is as dull and uninspiring as the rest of the series, it’s going to be the most exciting single entry of the year.
