A small group of players are currently playing on the World of Warcraft Public Test Region (PTR) to try out the Infinity Dawn dungeon coming in patch 10.1.5. in July. In doing so, they picked up some loot that could change the world of mount and ornament farming forever.
Collecting rare mounts and cool-looking gear has been one of the biggest draws to World of Warcraft all year, whether it’s sinking time and gold to buy Thunderfurry, returning to vanilla WoW’s Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, or farming Pandaren Enigma world bosses repeat each week with a small chance to ride a fancy new dragon or dinosaur.
But the rarest things have always been the loot you can no longer get! Over the years, parts of the game have been removed as content has shifted and disappeared from live servers. In a Dawn of the Infinites run Online Publisher UK content creator MR GMThe party is able to earn Quantum loot, which when used provides previously expanded gear and mounts.
This opens the door to some interesting possibilities. It’s just a quirky new item for the average player, with a hint of nostalgia for those who’ve been on the block for a while. However, for dedicated collectors with a mount tab full of different horses, dragons, and more, this might open the door to those few missing steeds that would otherwise be locked away.
“This is rubbish,” User Azeida wrote on Twitter, in response to MR GM’s post“The value of an item is based on 1. rarity and 2. availability. Adding the old item back now makes it worthless. It removes value from the person who owns them and the person who will acquire them, because Value is based entirely on removed items from the game. Example: shop helmets.”
While it may be a negative point, it hits at the heart of a concern some in the community have about these Quantum creations threatening to devalue the game’s only remaining source of prestige. With raids and PvP boosts common throughout the game, you’ll often see removed transmogs or mounts as a last resort to really showcase an account or character. Sure, there are titles and exploits, but nothing stands out like a dragon.
You’ll see a similar wave of complaints when Fel Drakes were given away as free Twitch drops when Dragonflight released. The value of that once-TCG-exclusive mount has plummeted, becoming a cry of pain among some collectors.
However, the counter-arguments to these complaints are simple and convincing, and one that the vast majority of players agree with. who cares! For the average player, the chance to get a brand new shoulder piece that their friends don’t have is enough to get them hyped in the dungeon. “Wait, wait, wait…Maybe this is an option to get Zulian Tiger without paying the BMAH gold cap? If so, please sign me up!” Tweet about Rare Hunter Avarwith many salivating for the chance to reap valuable rewards from the Quantum Courser reins.
All that said, there are a lot of question marks about this exciting new development. The main thing is how the loot works with your existing collection. Does Quantum Courser give you any Mount from the past even though you’ve already collected it? If so, wouldn’t it suck to get a low % mount drop rate and just get thrown at some random horse you bought eight years ago? Does it offer mounts from different types of content, like raids or PvP, or just dungeons?
We just don’t know until we get an official word from Blizzard. Depending on how they work, quantum loot in Infinite Dawn could be a wacky new dungeon, or another weekly farm for hardcore collectors. It will likely forever set the stage for rare loot farming in WoW.
Let us know about your lies on this! Do you feel like someone took away, say, a Legion Mythic raid moose? What about the fallen Ashbringer?
